Hey, great, go for it

It’s time for the European Union to kick Hungary out. There it is, a member state, casually flouting basic democratic norms and human rights, swiftly evolving into an authoritarian nightmare, with absolutely no meaningful consequences.

Because with one country voluntarily leaving, another being kicked out, that’ll be the end of the whole thing.

Go on, really, do it.

‘Woolmark funster’ – brilliant. While they are contemplating making Gay conversion therapy illegal, could some legislation be passed to make Owen Jones illegal?

  2. “casually flouting basic democratic norms and human rights”

Except for those of its own citizens.

  3. a member state, casually flouting basic democratic norms and human rights, swiftly evolving into an authoritarian nightmare, with absolutely no meaningful consequences.

It is odd because the Guardian usually loves countries that do that. How is Hungary’s human rights record compared to, say, Cuba? Venezuela? Saddam’s Iraq?

In fact the worse the human rights record is, the more likely the Guardian is to support them. Are they dragging innocent policemen and members of opposition parties out of their beds, putting burning tyres around their necks and burning them to death as the Nelson Mandela’s ANC did in South Africa?

  4. “casually flouting basic democratic norms and human rights”

I think thats code for ‘voting in right wing governments I don’t like’……………..

  5. It sounds just like the manic way journos are writing about Trump. Perhaps the Donald is also to blame for Brexit and Hungary?

  6. At the very least, article 7 of the Lisbon treaty – which demands “all EU countries respect the values of the EU”

How meaningless is that if the EU is nothing but the sum of its members, which we keep getting told it is; the commission simply following the will of the members?

    Correction – Winnie Mandela
Nelson only conspired to murder whites
Maybe you are confusing him with Jomo Kenyatta’s Mau Mau which murdered far more “Native Kenyans” than white settlers.
And Winnie didn’t stop at policemen, teenagers who fell out with her got “necklaces” too.

  8. owen jones – the perfect image to put on punchbags

Competition is stiff. I think Martin Kettle’s elderly lesbian vicar look has a slight edge over Owen’s school prefect. I sometimes think the purpose of comment macht frei is to discover the most punchable face in the British Isles.

  9. According to the mighty Owen, Hungary is breaching EU commitment to democracy – how? Presumably voting for Viktor Orban is undemocratic in just the way that the German Democratic Republic *was* “democratic”.

@ moqifen Punchbags that fall to pieces after one Right aren’t much use.

  10. I went to Hungary recently. It didn’t seem like an “authoritarian nightmare”.

I think there’s some confusion about Hungarian “racism”. Many people think because they oppose settling refugees that they are racist. Actually they pretty much don’t go for immigrants of any race.

Xenophobic might be closer. But they aren’t really scared of other cultures. They just don’t want them in Hungary.

Other way round. Brexit led to Trump & Hungary.

    @TMB

    ‘Woolmark funster’ is?

  12. Would it be better to be thrown out rather than let May continue useless negotiations?

  13. @squakbox – no one comes close to Jonathan Freedland – jones and kettle not even on the same page.

  14. “. . . casually flouting basic democratic norms and human rights, swiftly evolving into an authoritarian nightmare, with absolutely no meaningful consequences.”

So, they want the EU to kick the EU out?

  15. John 77,

This from the Guardian of all places:

It has been long assumed that Mandela, in prison, would have strongly condemned necklacing. Indeed, it was reported, and widely believed, that after Winnie had raised the issue – in 1986, when she declared that South Africans would liberate themselves with matchboxes and tyres – her husband had summoned her to Pollsmoor prison, in Cape Town and reprimanded her for it. It has emerged, however, from a document that circulated among journalists and academics in South Africa, and which finally dribbled into print in 2005, that Mandela condoned his wife’s statement. The document, the minutes of a meeting between Mandela, Winnie and Ayob inside Pollsmoor prison, said: “NM approved of WM’s necklace speech. He said that it was a good thing as there has not been one black person who has attacked WM.”

  16. john 77 – “Correction – Winnie Mandela Nelson only conspired to murder whites”

That is not true. The ANC’s policy was to gain control of the townships by necklacing everyone who did not support the South African Communist Party’s token front group, the ANC. Nelson Mandela’s party did that – which is not a surprise as he was a life long member of the SACP – even through the later Stalin years.

“Maybe you are confusing him with Jomo Kenyatta’s Mau Mau which murdered far more “Native Kenyans” than white settlers.”

Every Communist front group fighting for independence did so. Maybe Kenyatta did control the Mau Mau, perhaps not. But they hardly bothered the White population.

“And Winnie didn’t stop at policemen, teenagers who fell out with her got “necklaces” too.”

Nor was it healthy to support the PAC or any other Black party. Nelson Mandela would have someone lynch you.

  17. EU values are not the same thing as European values. Hungary is defending the latter. So should we. Perhaps we will after Brexit.

  18. ” The country’s parliament has not just passed a law making claims for asylum almost impossible: the very act of helping migrants and refugees has been criminalised. Furthermore, a 25% tax has been slapped on funding for NGOs that “support immigration”: in practice, that means having anything positive to say about immigration.”

Lol. By “… helping migrants and refugees.. “, do they actually mean “..aiding and abetting illegal immigrants..”? I think they do.

Of course, what they really, really hate is that the democratically elected government of Hungary is putting the interests of the Hungarian nation first, and not the interests of the middle-class, internationalist, anti-western leftists who staff NGOs.

    Orban for PM!

  19. Btw, can anyone articulate WHAT ‘European values’ are? As far as I can tell Europeans seem to think that ‘rights’ are a right to other people’s money. You have ‘hate speech’ laws, official churches and no self-defense. No double jeopardy protections, no statues of limitations, etc. So what ARE these values?

  20. @ SMFS
Wikipedia states that the first victim of Necklacing was a black woman in 1985, by which time Nelson Mandela had been in prison for 23 years.
Think! I know that you can.
Nelson founded Umkhonto we Sizwe in 1961 and was arrested in 1962 after an anti-Government sabotage campaign. He never had time to think about murdering blacks.
Mebbe he planned everything in Robbins Island and took 22 years to get the message out by a carrier pigeon with no wings and one leg that hopped all the way. Or mebbe it was Winnie.
If I was a Xhosa prince I should kill enemies/collaborators with Verwoerd/Volster with an Iklwa (which would a message to blacks eeven if it sent Afrikaners searching for Zulus)
