The Curajus State And CO2 Emissions

Is China showing us the way to go green?

??

Perhaps:

It is only fair to add that Larry and I are both members of the Green New Deal group, but this, as far as I know, has no influence on what he is writing here.

What he is saying is pretty fundamental. It’s not just that the model of capitalism we have is bust. We all know that. But he is suggesting there is a compelling reason for changing it.

People can, and do, live with bust relationships for years. We are with Anglo Saxon capitalism. People do that because they cannot think of anything better. So they live with least worst.

But Larry is saying there may be something better. I am not wholly convinced China has all the answers. I very much doubt Larry does either. But the point is that there has to be something a lot better than what we have now. And climate change gives us every reason to change.

So, how would we test this? CO2 emissions by country.

1995 2000 2005 2010 2013 2014 2015

China 3303544.09 3631896.98 6174716.60 8986614.44 10503137.04 10711036.75 10641788.99
USA 5294648.43 5873867.33 5886317.61 5519483.81 5255530.16 5312226.27 5172337.73

Oh, maybe that Anglo Saxon free market capitalism stuff does work then? Looks like the supporters of the Curajus State will just have to fin another reason for fascism then.

  1. Those tenth significant digits are truly informative and make the whole thing so much more legible.

    /pendantry

  2. Those numbers are inconvenient and will shortly become forbidden.

Anyway, the actual emissions don’t matter. Signing agreements you have no intention of honouring and making speeches about how green you are are what counts.

Write a speech, leave all your lights on and fly to New York to deliver it to an audience who have also just flown into New York. Make a difference today!

  3. China is guilty of burning 51% of the world’s total coal consumption and producing 27.9% of the CO2 emitted – 9331.6 million tonnes of CO2 in 2017 – obviously more of the nastier pollutants produced by coal such as SO2, NO2, etc. China’s CO2 emissions have increased nearly twenty-fold in the last 50 years, while the world total has less than trebled.
Tim, Edgar’s figures are not actual emission numbers – they are emissions per $1000 of GDP so tend to flatter the USA as it moves to software, but they point in roughly the right direction.

  4. Interested,

Short term satisfactorily, but due to the degree of irreparable organ damage due to some seriously fucked up physiology, there is some future uncertainty. That said, I expect to keep the rate of progression close enough to zero to live a roughly normal life for at least years, possibly decades, yet. For further details, may I refer the honourable gentleman to the reply I gave some blogposts ago.

  5. ” I am not wholly convinced China has all the answers.”

Yea, I feel the same about Hitler, Vlad the Impaler and Ted Bundy.

    Just not wholly convinced.

  6. ‘But the point is that there has to be something a lot better than what we have now.’

Has to be. Even though 200 years of searching for it has turned up nothing.

‘And climate change gives us every reason to change.’

Change to that which hasn’t been found. So,
since we haven’t found it, let’s just change to a system that kills millions of people. No suggestion it’s better than what we have. Just a change, cos there has to be something better.

    Double ought zero intellect.

  7. I am not wholly convinced China has all the answers.

Yes. Frustratingly they do allow some economic freedom, don’t they? Otherwise tantalisingly close to being the ideal society…

  8. BiG,

Take care of yourself. We may not always see eye to eye but would miss your contributions here.

  9. Gamecock

You have summed it up brilliantly

‘Change to that which hasn’t been found. So,
since we haven’t found it, let’s just change to a system that kills millions of people. No suggestion it’s better than what we have. Just a change, cos there has to be something better.

    Double ought zero intellect’

The arrogance of the man is unparalleled – we give up a proven system which has flaws for something completely unknown for one designed by a man of questionable temperament ignorant of apparently anything of import and who responds to legitimate queries by forbidding questions.

Sounds great – where do I sign up?
