They’re being really quite open about it, aren’t they?

This is a political prosecution:

Michael Cohen, Donald Trump’s former lawyer and right-hand-man, reportedly faces a federal investigation into possible bank and tax fraud relating to more than $20m in loans.

The New York Times reported that federal investigators in Manhattan were reaching the end of their inquiries and were “considering filing charges by the end of August”. According to the newspaper, their focus was falling on multi-million dollar loans Cohen received from two New York banks as well as on income his family gained from the city’s yellow taxi business.

Federal investigators were also homing in on Cohen’s role in arranging hush money for two women who alleged affairs with Trump before the 2016 presidential election. The pay-offs might have constituted a breach of campaign finance law, the New York Times reported.

The darkening cloud of federal prosecutorial interest amid possible imminent charges are likely to substantially crank up pressure on Cohen to co-operate with the on-going investigation of special counsel Robert Mueller. That probe is reaching a critical stage as Mueller seeks to determine whether collusion took place between the Trump campaign and Russia to sway the outcome of the 2016 election.

Whether and when to prosecute seems to be based on whether he’ll turn on Trump.

Sure, this isn’t political at all, is it?

  1. Except that this is how US investigations/prosections work and always have, whether led by or aimed at people of either party or none. You catch small fry and apply such pressure – through charges like this – that they have little choice except to fold and implicate the next bigger fry up the food chain, as the prosecutor or DA or whatever works his way up towards his real target. It’s brutal, it’s fundamentally unjust, but it’s not special this time or a sign that there’s a witch hunt. Just business as usual in the meat grinder the Americans call their “justice system”.

It’s perfectly normal for the ruling party to commission a pee-pee fanfic dossier on its opponent during an election, and for the incumbent government to use said dodgy dossier as a pretext for using the machinery of state to spy on said opposition, and for the permanent bureaucracy to parlay said piss prose into an open-ended official harassment campaign against the new President and everyone he’s ever worked with, as revenge for his crime of winning.

    Just part n parcel, innit.

Lol @ The Guardian pretending this isn’t banana republic bullshit. At least Matthew Hopkins actually believed in witches.

  3. Steve, the question was whether what’s going on is specially biased or unfair, rather than whether it’s grim and gross but even-handedly applied. The Republicans haven’t a leg to stand on since Ken Starr, and it is utterly unconvincing for a man like Trump, who if he has moral or constitutional limits to his behaviour keeps them secret from us all, to complain that his opponents are underhanded or deceptive or dishonest or just plain mean.

  4. I do so hope Q is real, that there are gazillion sealed indictments and that Gitmo has been renovated to receive the corrupt of both parties, alphabet agencies, tech giant egos and human smugglers. If not, it’s still a genius bit of tangled plotting and detective clues, parlayed on wish fulfillment and a sense of outrage at a wicked world. It definitely beats anything on Netflix.

  5. Isn’t it just that it’s unfair to enter an election with an unspecified cloud hanging over either side? Getting any charges (or confirmation of no charges) into the public domain so that they can be openly discussed seems like a good idea.

Also, it’s normal for prosecutors to use whatever leverage they have, short of waterboarding.

  6. I seriously doubt that either Cohen or Manafort have any information not already in the possession of Mueller. This may be an attempt to scare others away from supporting Trump. More likely, it’s in the same category as the couple of dozen Russian indictments, meant to make it appear that Mueller is actually doing something useful, when he’s been barking up the wrong tree from the start.

Ken Starr, man like trump, limits to his behavior. WTF are you talking about? Your assertions have no meaning to rational people.

  8. Napsjam –Cockrot.

    Trump’s moral limits are “hidden”?

Well he isn’t engaging in treason and sedition to overthrow a democratic vote. Or talking a pack of transparent lies about Russia.

He should long ago have had Muller and the gang arrested and traded the rest of their lives in Supermax for the names and details on the Deep State–starting with info for the Toxic Twosome’s life sentences.

  9. Napsjam, can you point to where Trump has exceeded his moral or constitutional limits – as president?

Note – whimsical partisan rulings by junior judiciary do not count.

Politics have never been this entertaining! I recommend qmap.pub for anyone with an idle moment who enjoys internet sleuthing.

  11. Mr Ecks: You’re rather missing the point that the purpose of the investigation is indeed to discover whether Trump was fairly elected, or whether he illegally colluded with a foreign power to do so.
