To define civil society

They say of the project:

The Coalition for Inclusive Capitalism is a global not-for-profit organization that was founded in 2014 by Lynn Forester de Rothschild, the Chairman of E.L. Rothschild LLC. The organization was established to engage leaders across business, government and civil society in their efforts to make capitalism more equitable, sustainable, and inclusive. The Coalition develops practical thought leadership and convenes the Conference on Inclusive Capitalism to bring together renowned leaders from the world’s largest and most influential asset owners, asset managers and corporations to positively influence the future of capitalism. The organization works with other like-minded groups through our Allied Efforts program and extensive public outreach.

Note those words ‘and civil society’. I checked their website. There is no hint of a single civil society organisation involved.

So, err, what is the definition of civil society?

Amazingly, it’s not only those groups which have a mate of Ritchie’s in them. It’s, umm, any gathering of peeps in society. The Cub Scouts are civil society. The FA – to the extent that it’s not enshrined in legislation – is civil society.

  1. “Civil society” implies volunteers, doesn’t it? Scout leaders are volunteers, whereas the FA are all paid.

  2. Capitalism was Marx’s pejorative of free trade.

Inclusive Capitalism means inclusive free trade. It doesn’t even make sense.

‘The organization was established to engage leaders across business, government and civil society in their efforts to make capitalism more equitable, sustainable, and inclusive.’

    “Make free trade more equitable.”

    “Make free trade more sustainable.”

    “Make free trade more inclusive.”

    It is utter nonsense.

‘The Coalition develops practical thought leadership and convenes the Conference on Inclusive Capitalism to bring together renowned leaders from the world’s largest and most influential asset owners, asset managers and corporations to positively influence the future of capitalism.’

    Thought leadership? WTF?

‘Positively influence the future of capitalism.’

I don’t even know what that means. But the future of free trade isn’t really what they are interested in. Free trade doesn’t need to be influenced. It will just happen all on its own. Without help from the Rothschild’s.

  3. “Free trade doesn’t need to be influenced. It will just happen all on its own.”

I do think those words have enormous significance in all this doom-mongering about what’s going to happen re Brexit (And also re Trumpian supposed trade wars) Trade is done between people, not nations. The only role governments play is to get in the way. They get in the way too much & the people want to trade are going to get mighty pissed off. (Or smuggling wouldn’t happen.) People get too pissed off, they’ll just get themselves different governments.
As I said elsewhere, you really wouldn’t want to be a French government official telling a French farmer his crop can rot in the field because his government, on instructions from Brussels, is preventing it being sold in British shops. That’s a French government official looking at a lynching.

  4. “French government official telling a French farmer his crop can rot in the field”

I thought the EU paid them for rotting their crops in a field?

  5. AndrewM: ‘volunteer’ isn’t the opposite of ‘paid’, ‘unpaid’ is the opposite of ‘paid’, ‘conscript’ is the opposite of ‘volunteer’.
