Umm, why?

Parliament must “seriously consider” levying a tax on meat to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help to render the farming industry carbon neutral, the Green party MP, Caroline Lucas, is urging.

She will say on Friday that a meat tax in the UK could be offset for more sustainable meat producers, such as organic livestock farmers, through more money for sustainable agriculture schemes.

  1. This would be about as popular as one of those “learn to swim” public information ads fronted by Michael Barrymore, so when can we expect the Conservatives to do it?

  2. Instead of artificially increasing the user-end prices why not reduce the supply-end subsidies for the same effect?

Sadly I have to echo the comments of Steve – given the state of the public finances, total unwillingness to amend the franchise to raise the minimum voting age, reinstate plural voting and undertake electoral reform of postal voting the Conservative look likely to acquiesce on this one, just as they have allowed devolved government to install MUP, and agreed to bans on tobacco display in shops, a sugar tax, plain packaging and all the other horrors perpetrated by ‘public health’ advocates and Environmentalists alike.

    As for Caroline Lucas, the admiration of her by Richard Murphy ought to bar her from standing for Parliament. Ghastly is an understatement – not far short of a genuine Fascist in her complete disregard and utter contempt for freedom

  4. It’s just one of those things which has an air of inevitability about it. Didn’t we did this recently and decide that if the cows don’t eat the grass and produce methane, bacteria eats it instead and produces methane. A greenie in my office was bemoaning the other day that when a tree dies it rots and produces methane, therefore tress don’t absorb CO2. There really is no pleasing these people.

    Back on topic, if there is a No Deal Brexit, the favoured outcome of most people on this board, the resulting recession will make all tax rises such as this political suicide.

  5. I would have thought the reason was obvious – middle-class Progressive people buy organic. This is the only solution which hits their enemies (i.e. everyone who is not like them) while not affecting them.

  7. This is the problem with fascist government. Once you let the government have all the power it wants, it will use that power for whatever it wants.

    It starts rationally enough at the beginning, but over time, it will get to where they want a tax on meat to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help to render the farming industry carbon neutral.

    You have to fight when they want to require seat belts in cars. You can’t be distracted by the fact that they are a good idea, because once you give government that power, they will grow it to where cow flatulence is the business of the national government.

    The U.S. Federal government has 615 agencies, making sure the people do things right. Perhaps 15 of them do things actually authorized by the Constitution.

    UK sees this fascist control from Brussels.

    There is no “I” in team; there is no “deal” in Brexit.

  8. Have they calculated human methane production by bacteria in the largebowel of those coerced into eating legumes instead of first class protein?
    Aside, I think I would rather inhale diesel fumes than those produced by fellow commuters on public transport.

    Indeed. If they were ever satisfied they’d have to stop. And it’s too much fun.

    On related note, there seems to be a concerted effort in the U.K. to promote veganism. I’ve lost count of the newspaper articles I’ve seen over the couple of weeks I’ve been here.

    It has been a sustained campaign, laying the ground for a meat ban, which may follow a smoking ban or prohibition of alcohol. These people are insane but insidious and they are engaged in a war of attrition. To quote from a film:

    ‘Those vegans are out there – they can’t be bargained with, they can’t be reasoned with. They don’t feel pity or remorse, and they absolutely will not stop – ever – until you stop eating meat (or are made to stop by law)’

    No, they burp more. Organic beef grows slower than intensely farmed beef, and eats less nutritious food (grass rather than grain/soya beans) so produces more methane in their lifetime.

    Humans aren’t ruminants so don’t produce methane in their guts (unless they’ve got a nasty infection). Human farts are mostly carbon dioxide plus hydrogen for flammability and hydrogen sulfide for that charming odour of tube carriages and buses.

A way station on my long intellectual journey to the realisation, about ten years ago, that always and everywhere the basic enemy of freedom is not communism or fascism or proggieism, but instead the psychological urge to boss people about, I began also to see that puritanism is the main modern proxy for the that urge.

    And a subset of our modern puritans I recognised in the vegans, on the basis that meat-eaters would always let the vegans get on with it (even if we poke fun at them) but the vegans, I felt, would never let us alone.

    And they won’t. As with all the others, the anti-smokers, anti-sugar and salt idiots, climate change enforcers and so on. Puritans, all. But more important, underlying this, is their urge to boss and to control.

    It was a point famously nailed by Chesterton in that quote about how such people burn with righteousness because they believe they’re doing it for our own good.

    What needs to be addressed, and extirpated, is the psychological urge to boss and to control.

  14. As I’ve pointed out before (sorry to bore everyone), methane expelled by farmed animals derives ultimately from plants. So you can’t compare greenhouse gases produced from fossil fuels and those produced by farming, the latter is very much a second order effect (reducing CO2 to CH4, which in less than 10 years oxidises back to CO2 again).

    And, absent those farm animals, the vegetation would still be digested by fungi and bacteria, with essentially similar results, unless Ms Lucas is proposing to pave over the Amazon.

  16. Arthur the Cat: the species found in bowels depends on the individual diet and you do get methane producers in humans although not the same species as ruminants’ foreguts.
