Snigger

The Trump administration has downgraded the diplomatic status of the EU mission in Washington, without informing the mission or Brussels, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The downgrade from nation state to international organisation status reverses an Obama administration decision in 2016 to grant the EU an enhanced diplomatic role in Washington, and is being seen in Brussels as a snub reflecting a general antipathy to the EU in the Trump administration. The president has supported Brexit and has described the EU as a “foe”.

The change, first reported by the German broadcaster, Deutsche Welle, potentially means that the EU mission would have less clout and access to US officials.

It is an international organisation and it isn’t a nation. So, fair enough.

And yes, possibly a petty action. And I may well be petty for sniggering about it. But then so what?

  1. St Obama waited 8 years to grant the EU an enhanced role so it can’t have been that important or clear cut a decision. More likely another of his petty stuff it to the Republicans EOs than considered diplomatic strategy.

I like the way it wasn’t announced, they had to figure it out themselves:

At the state funeral for the late President George HW Bush, on 5 December, the EU’s ambassador was not called up in the usual chronological order, from the longest-serving to the newest ambassador, “but he was called up as the last person”, the EU official said.

The previous day, in Brussels, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had questioned the EU’s role, in a major policy speech.

“Brexit – if nothing else – was a political wake-up call. Is the EU ensuring that the interests of countries and their citizens are placed before those of bureaucrats here in Brussels?” he asked.

Am I being petty? Of course, but there was a reason we had court jesters and if they’ve been removed we’ll have to do the job ourselves.

Oh, and to stick it to those silly people who voted for Brexit, in the UK. Remember his intervention (in another countries democracy) to state we would be at the back of the queue? Nasty twat.

What a pointless president Obama was.

  3. So the EU slags off Trump, claim they need and army to protect the EU from US aggression, and are then totaly gobsmacked when he snubs them? These people are imbeciles.

But since the end of WW2, they’ve constantly snubbed the US when it suited them, and the US shrugged it off since it was in their interest to.

Why shouldn’t they think that they can continue the status quo of the last 70-odd years?

Watching them realie that the game has changed is schadenbonertastic though 😀

  5. USA Ambassador: EU ‘Utterly Obstructionist’

“The Commission in particular is out of touch with reality,” Sondland said.

“They are off in a cloud, regulating to the heart´s content, and regulating some things that don´t even need to be regulated because they haven´t even occurred yet, while stifling growth and innovation.”

USA Ambassador being honest, diplomats aghast.

  6. The EU shouldn’t be sitting in on UN or G5/7/20 etc meetings either. If the EU members want to give up their seats for the EU then let them. Until that happens it should be kept out.

EU members are already obliged by Article 34 of the Lisbon treaty to parrot the EU position at international organisations so a direct EU presence is not needed.
