Those mystery Brexit Party donations

Gosh!

The Electoral Commission is under mounting pressure to launch an investigation into the funding of Nigel Farage’s Brexit party because of concerns that its donation structure could allow foreign interference in British democracy.

Before Thursday’s crucial European elections, Gordon Brown has written to the Electoral Commission calling on it to urgently examine whether the party has sufficient safeguards on its website to prevent the contribution of “dirty money”.

The former Labour prime minister will use a speech in Glasgow on Monday to say an investigation into the Brexit party’s finances is urgent and essential.

“Nigel Farage says this election is about democracy. Democracy is fatally undermined if unexplained, unreported and thus undeclared and perhaps under the counter and underhand campaign finance – from whom and from where we do not know – is being used to influence the very elections that are at the heart of our democratic system,” he will say, according to pre-released extracts.

“Now Mr Farage heads a new Brexit party, which is making questionable claims about the true source of its funding at a time when the Electoral Commission has warned of the dangers of multiple, small, anonymous donations being a cover for dirty money.”

While other parties require personal information from donors, the Brexit party allows donations of less than £500 via just a PayPal account, which critics said leaves the way open to abuse by foreign donors wishing to influence British elections.

Scandal!

13 paragraphs later we are told:

Only donations over £500 have to be declared under British law.

Good innit? Absolutely obeying the law preciselyt to every jot and tittle, is undermining democracy. Because, of course, it’s the wrong people obeying the law.

  1. There’s going to be a lot of this, and it will get increasingly desperate, over the next few days.

  2. The Meissen Bison

Gordon Brown is not doing himself a favour by reminding people he exists.

However, it’s good that he has popped up for his comedic value and as MC says, there will be an enormous amount of clutching at non-existent straws as the traditional parties and politicians try to shore up their collapsing support.

  3. Bloke in North Dorset

Trump proved that it’s not the amount you have to spend but the message you send.

And they still haven’t learned this is exactly the type of manoeuvre that makes the case against the elite and establishment.

  4. Poor old Broon has just lost his title of “worst post-war PM”. Though he retains “worst Chancellor ever” in perpetuity.

PS The Brexit Party have offered to give a BBC journalist full access to their accounts. Expect this to be ignored in forthcoming ‘news’ bulletins.

  5. What exactly was the reward to Broon for dumping our gold stocks to enable JP Morgan to cover their short position?

  6. We should only allow reputable people, such as Max Mosley or the Hinduja brothers, to donate to political parties.

  7. I edit:

    (i) Poor old Broon has just lost his title of “worst post-war PM except Toni Blair”.

(ii) Though he retains “worst Chancellor ever” in perpetuity, having been worse than even Winston Churchill.

  8. I could tell them where £25 of that dirty money came from. It came from my dirty bank account which has never before sullied itself by contributing to a political party. I don’t know what came over it. Maybe it was the thought of May’s, sorry, I mean the EU’s Withdrawal Agreement.

  9. Surely it’ll go like this:

    •Brexit Party comes last:
    Meejah: “Donations? Eh?”

    •Brexit Party wins:
Meejah: “OMIGOD MASSIVE FRAUD SOMEWHERE NEVERMIND WHERE OH GOD THE RUSSIANS WILL EAT OUR BABIES!!!”

    Or something like that.

One of the many Brexit supporters I have on my timeline noticed ‘Soapy Joe’ babbling on about Dan Snow receiving a Brexit party leaflet apparently with his ballot paper and saying this could invalidate the entirety of the Brexit party’s campaign – not sure – don;t think the potato has picked it up yet but it kind of illustrates the desperation of the people who would overturn 17.4 million votes. Be sure if the Brexit party gets over 40% of the vote it will intensify

  11. “…Dan Snow receiving a Brexit party leaflet apparently with his ballot paper…”

I recently saw on social media something like:

Remoaner: “I got a leaflet from the Brexit Party with my name and address on, but my housemate didn’t get anything from them. Doesn’t this prove they’re racist?”

Someone else: “Is your housemate on the electoral roll?”

    Remoaner: “No.”

  12. Van_Patten,

    What is this guy on?

Unless “vote Brexit Party” leaflets appear in lots of envelopes, with lots of other people in the New Forest area reporting it, he’s clearly lying.

    Way to trash your reputation.

  13. VP,

How on earth is TBP supposed to have got its flyers in with the ballot papers? Or did they just both happen to arrive on the same morning?

  14. As with every other election for the past 20 years or so I recently received a communication from the Conservative party which was formatted to look exactly like a polling card. But this is acceptable because reasons.

  15. @dearieme
I won’t argue with your suggested improvement, except to observe that Bliar at least won 3 elections, whereas Broon couldn’t even manage one. Gordon was a moron, even in purely political terms.

  16. @ Chris
Gordon Brown was not a moron in political terms – just too nasty by half.
For those unaware of the truth – Bobbety Salisbury was the elder brother of Lord David Cecil, one of the leading academics of his generation, and “too clever by half” did not refer to Iain Macleod’s intelligence but that, even though innocent, he could be *suspected* of cheating at cards. Like Caesar’s wife, Conservative politicians had to be above suspicion. For that reason he would approve of Theresa May although he would have negotiated a decent set of exit terms by holding WTO rules as the starting point and demanding a concession from Brussels to match any concession that we made.
