Weird really

The two women left needing hospital treatment after they were attacked on a bus in a homophobic assault have blamed a rise in rightwing populism for growing hate crime and called on people to stand up for each other.

Melania Geymonat, 28, and her girlfriend, Chris, 29, defiantly announced they would not be intimidated into hiding their sexuality, days after they said they were attacked by several young men when they refused to kiss upon demand.

The attack was of course appalling. It’s vile to attack anyone peacefully going about their business and that’s all there is to that.

There is another little thought that crops up though. The claim is – and there’s no reason to doubt it – that they refused to kiss in public and were therefore beaten up. Does this mean that we have, as a society, managed to raise some young men to be quite so dim as to not know what the internet is for?

  1. All London buses have CCTV. The fact the video hasn’t been running non-stop on all channels makes me think these attackers aren’t white skinheads.

have blamed a rise in rightwing populism for growing hate crime

Yes, I’m sure these four young men of undisclosed ethnicity were radicalised by Ann Widdecombe.

  3. I find it’s always a good idea to wait a week before taking “hate” crimes seriously; there are so many of the made up variants. As Julia mentions, there is always certainly CCTV running, so the truth will come out eventually.

My thoughts as I was reading it. Definitely a case of PONA, if true.

In not unrelated news this very long thread from Mr Andy Ngo makes me wonder if there are any so called hate crimes in the States, especially ones alleged to involve Trump supporters, that aren’t hoaxes.

  5. Agree with comments. If the attackers were white males you’d expect that CCTV footage to be all over the internet, and a frenzied manhunt for the perps led by all the media. That didn’t happen, so we can presume that probably… don’t need to spell it out, do I?

Also, I’ve searched the internet for all the stories on the five men arrested, and not one gives their names. At least one attacker is 18, so it can’t be because they’re underage…

  6. The chances of there being a group of 5 white English male youths on a bus in London is so vanishingly small as to be on a par with finding that WW2 bomber on the moon………

  7. When the story first broke, one of the victims said three of the men had ‘London accents’ (I’m guessing not Cockney) and the fourth spoke Spanish.

  8. “Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary proof.”

No they don’t; all they need is good evidence.

  9. Julia, the point of the story is fake. The details are irrelevant.

‘I want people to feel emboldened to stand up to the same people who feel emboldened by the rightwing populism that is, I feel, responsible for the escalation in hate crimes’

The point of the story is YOU are guilty of this crime.

Somebody beats somebody up, and it’s societies fault. Collectivism includes collective guilt.

Somebody beat somebody up should not be national news.

  10. The quoted bit calls this a “homophobic” attack. In the linked article, however:

“They started behaving like hooligans, demanding that we kissed so they could enjoy watching, calling us ‘lesbians’ and describing sexual positions …”

Isn’t that more homophilic than homophobic?

  11. ‘Lesbian couple assaulted by group of young males blame rise of rightwing populism for growth in hate crime’

No evidence presented that these are rightwing kids.

‘It’s also because we are women.’

Again, no evidence. We are supposed to believe that kids beat up women because they are women.

‘The next thing I know is that Chris is in the middle of the bus fighting with them.’

So the women started the violence; the poor children just defended themselves.

They got the women’s names wrong in the article. They are Jussie and Smollett.

  12. re CCTV, about 15 years ago I was attacked on a bus (drawing blood), and by the time they got to the CCTV it had looped and had recorded over the incident.

  13. It’s a bizarre form of CogDis though, innit?

Imagine being mugged by what was almost certainly a gang of diverse enrichers, then basically telling the press:

“You know who I blame for this? Uh… Annunziata Rees-Mogg.”

Urban soylibs have worse survival instincts than lemmings were said to have. They’ll be cursing Nigel Farage while laughing jihadiwaddis toss them off The Shard.

  14. Yep. Women smarted off to the wrong people.

If you don’t know your audience, you should keep a civil tongue.

Around these parts, if you stir up a hornets nest and get stung, you are not a victim, and hornets are not bad.

Adult women fight some boys, and the Guardian picks sides. The women tell lies about what happened. Doesn’t matter to the Guardian. The women don’t matter to the Guardian. The children don’t matter to the Guardian.

Their agenda is what matters, and they’ll exploit ANYONE to advance their agenda.

  15. Er.. if the two women weren’t kissing. Which presumably they weren’t, or their wouldn’t have demands for them to do so. What gave our putative populist hooligans reason to believe they were rug munchers & not just two friends sitting together on a bus? Looking a the photo, that’s what they look like. Normal everyday totty. Nothing particularly dyke about them at all.
So what sparked it off. There’s something we’re not being told here.

  16. They said they might have kissed already, their recollection seems vague on some bits, so they were being asked for a repeat performance.
Massively blown out of proportion event compared to the knife crime and other issues in London.

Not really. You’re using middle class white man thinking. Of course PLU wouldn’t even consider whether 2 women on their own were dykes or not, and if we did wouldn’t care a jot either, its their business.

However as looked at through the eyes of one of the wonderfully diverse cultures that we’ve inported into the country, then it makes a lot more sense. Its quite easy to see how the scenario would unfold: group of suitably diversely enriched youths see couple of attractive women on their own, start making lurid sexual demands, as diverse youths do, feminism not being that big a part of Islam or in sub-Saharan Africa. One of the girls responds negatively in a way that either explicitly states they’re not interested in men or implies that, and the rest writes itself. It’ll either be a bunch of RoPers with active anti-gay attitudes, or a bunch of Dindus who didn’t like being ‘disrespected’ in public and had to put the hoes in their place.

Welcome to the wonders of diversity……London style.

    Exactly

Could it be the attackers were “far right” RoPs?

To quote Sad Dick “stop complaining, it’s part & parcel of living in modern London”

    @BiS

I took this extract from the article: …said Chris. “I’m not scared about being visibly queer. If anything, you should do it more.” to mean that the women were overtly “visibly queer” before anything untoward happened.

Being “Out & Proud” does not guarantee immunity from the attentions of far-right populist hate-fuelled fellow citizens of no appearance.

  20. What on earth is “visibly queer”? Paraphrasing Dorothy Parker, isn’t your sexuality what you do in the bedroom where you don’t scare the horses.

  21. I’m wondering who took the photo on the bus.

According to their story the girls and the lads were the only ones upstairs.
