The porn filter turned up too high

One advertising company is insisting that “Cressida Dick” and “Dick Cheney” are non-allowable pornography. As is the word “sex”.

Sheesh.

  1. There is an apocryphal tale of how an earlier attempt at automated censorship converted Dick van Dyke to Jerk van woman with sensible shoes.

  2. Clearly not woke enough. Cressida Dick should obviously be allowed, nay celebrated, but Dick Cheney clearly not.

  3. I sometimes wonder if a partial cause of the tranny madness is the widespread use of ‘gender’ for ‘sex’. I fear some prim civil servant in the 70s saw gender as a way to get the nasty sex word off Britain’s passports…

  4. Sounds fair enough to me.
Shooting a brazilian ‘cos he looked a bit forin’ scores quite high on my obscenity scale.

  5. WhenIwerebutalad we always said “cock”: I’d never heard “dick” used until long into adult life. I can still remember being astonished to hear an English boy say “prick” though it was pretty obvious what he meant.

Could “dick” be one of those words popularised by Hollywood?

  6. I had my ad service moaning at me that my comments section is too sweary. I looked at the list of banned words and you can’t even mention the words “sex” or “Nazi”. Pathetic.

  7. I stayed in a hotel once where the wifi wouldn’t allow Essex, Sussex etc. True story.

  8. I seem to recall that the town of Scunthorpe has fallen foul of these kinds of filters in the past.

  9. Some years ago comments in the Sheffield Star website regarding traffic problems on Penistone Road were all blocked.

  10. Used to be a game on early chat sites to try and get people to use words like ‘pussy’ or ‘Scunthorpe’ and watch the automatic ban filter boot them out for 5mins for obscene language also a challenge to find new words it would ban

No mentioning one of Sweden’s TV Channels then – the one after TV Fem

When I saw it in TV Guide I thought “Wow, excellent”. Sadly it didn’t meet expectations

iirc Scunthorpe was blocked in AOL’s browser.

  12. It is all rather silly really because any idiot can instantly get around these blocks by mis-spelling the offending words in a way that human readers can understand. For example S(unthorpe.

  13. Dear Mr Worstall

In the good old days Friends Reunited (RIP) used to render Pakistan as P***stan.

No idea how they handled Dickistan, Prickistan or Scunthorepistan. They must exist somewhere in the multiverse.
