Yes love

There appears to be some uncertainty as to which “home” the four congresswomen could go back to (Trump’s ‘go back’ racism is crude, but may yet be effective, 17 July). Is it too much to hope that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s family tree might reveal roots in the UK that she could return to? She would be most welcome.

And much of America would like her to take the opportunity too.

  1. The breathless stupidity of the letter-writer literally leaps off the page. Perhaps she simply does not grasp that a US citizen like Rep. Ocasio-Cortez is not permitted to simply move to the UK, no matter how welcome Ms Gough would make her feel. The UK has strict immigration laws, which do not permit foreign nationals to take up residence at will, never mind working for a living. The appropriate visa(s) are required, supported by suitable evidence, and moving to the UK or working without the appropriate visa is a criminal offence. A person found committing these offences will be arrested and detained in a secure facility prior to being deported to their country of origin.

In other words – just like the US.

Can we perhaps air-drop a little reality over Cottenham and see whether it can’t take hold?

  2. The rules of #wokelebensraum are pretty complicated, but IIUIC (AIIID), it means white Americans are fundamentally illegitimate because some of their their ancestors owned antique farming equipment and were beastly to Injuns, but at the same time every Toltec midget, Pygmy negrito or Muhammad-jihad who finds themselves on US soil is more American than the people whose families built the place up over generations, and it’s outrageously raciss to suggest they go back to the shitholes whose norms and values they keep extolling as superior to their current country of residence.

  3. Not to pile on or anything, but since Rep Ocasio-Cortez makes so much of her Puerto-Rican heritage and her status as a ‘person of color’, maybe she would feel happier living there? It is, after all, US territory, and she can move there at will with no need for a visa or any immigration difficulties.

On the other hand – maybe not?

Take especial note that, in this entire report, there is not one mention of the Governor’s party-political affiliations, past or present. Readers are invited to play this round of the game, named by Don Surber, of ‘Name that Party’. Why is that party such a hotbed of racism, sexism. homophobia and exclusion?

  4. It is not racist to be anti-American because “Americans” are not a race. It appears to be racist to br pro-“American”. Go figure as the Yanks would say

  5. ‘Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.’

The Left are the racists, creating race out of a non-racial statement.

  6. At least Occasional Cortex hasn’t been married to her brother.

Just not a Puerto Rican thing, I suppose.

  7. The comment comes from someone who lives in Cottenham in the fens, says it all ……………

  8. ‘Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.’

He could have been referring to their congressional districts

  9. I thought she came from Brooklyn? Go back and fix the crime and disorder in Brooklyn?

I take Lenny Henry’s line: I’m not going back to Dudlei!

  10. Alexandria Occasional-Cortex is of Puerto Rican heritage. iirc Britain never owned Puerto Rico

What he actually said of the women was ‘why don’t the go back and help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came?’ – alluding to their heritage and as a rebuke on their “USA is evil stance”

In speech he said “We’re a free country; If you don’t like USA, you can leave”

    Nothing racist about either statement.

    As for Ilhan Omar

The Democratic party faces a test of character. Most mainstream institutions have failed such tests in recent years but, in the spirit of Samuel Beckett, let’s try again and fail better this time. The trial confronting the electoral vehicle of American liberalism is whether liberals still have a firm grip on the wheel or the extremists in the back are doing the driving.

Ilhan Omar, a freshman congresswoman from Minnesota’s fifth district, has introduced a resolution in defence of boycotts. While the text doesn’t mention Israel explicitly, in her accompanying media comments Omar made it clear that she has in mind specifically the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS). BDS aims to isolate, stigmatize and delegitimize Israel in the political, commercial, academic and cultural sectors.

Boycotters refuse to work with Israelis or Israeli organizations, protest shops that sell Israeli goods and demand the cancelling of performances by Israeli artists. According to the left-wing anti-Zionist scholar Norman Finkelstein: ‘It’s not an accidental and unwitting omission that BDS does not mention Israel… [T]here’s a large segment of the movement that wants to eliminate Israel.’

While BDS on its face appears merely anti-Israel, the Anti-Defamation League notes that ‘many of the founding goals of the BDS movement… along with many of the strategies employed in BDS campaigns are anti-Semitic’. Organizing boycotts of Jewish vendors or campaigning for special markings to be affixed to their products has long been a facet of anti-Semitism, most notoriously by the Nazis after coming to power in Germany. In echoing the practice of boycotting Jews, BDS singles out the Jewish state as the Jew of the world and treats it accordingly. The German parliament drew this comparison when it voted in May to recognize BDS as anti-Semitic
    ….
Omar is a troll who knows what she’s doing, knows how much it hurts Jews but continues because she is driven by prejudice, paranoia and a desire to remake American foreign policy along her lines. Her choice of the boycott issue is not coincidental and comes after 27 US states passed laws denying contracts to businesses that engage in discriminatory boycotts of Israel. Progressives whose position on free speech of late has been vague are suddenly very exercised about First Amendment rights….

  11. Wasn’t that long ago her own party was making her apologise for comments, elect diversity and you get diversity, in all its lovely and not so lovely forms

  12. @ Pcar
Sounds like a device to protect a vulnerable immigrant. But why should an *honest* woman deny that?
