‘Ello?

As listeners to the Football Weekly podcast already know, I’m a laugher not a fighter. I would much prefer not to be writing this and to exist in a world where my transition did not require any comment. But since we do not yet live in that world, here I am. All I ask is for respect and kindness – for me and for transgender people in general – at a time when those commodities seem to be in ever‑shorter supply.

You’re a journalist writing about sport. Your gender and or sexuality don’t come into it. What is this “require any comment?”

  1. What is this “require any comment?”

Since the writer works for the guardian where we know institutionalised transphobia to be rife, comment is entirely legitimate. Respect and kindness be blowed: who is lifting the seat in the ladies’ loo?

  2. ‘Require to comment’

Because he/she/it will parade their condition before us so we can affirm, do obeisance, sacrifice our values at their feet, validate them, and if we do not, the Woken SS will be deployed, because these days tolerance no longer means we merely quietly accept something/someone with which we disagree or do not like and just ignore it and get on with the rest of our lives. Tolerance is no longer enough.

  3. What never crosses a journalist’s mind is the idea that readers are more interested in the news than in the journalist.

  4. @Dennis

That’s very true, and journalists can get very self-indulgent about these things, though readers might have wondered from the byline change whether the Italian football writer had been replaced by his sister. So I think on this occasion I’d let them off. Can’t help but think this is all a bit self-congratulatory on the Guardian’s part given their recent trans travails.

“You’re a journalist writing about sport. Your gender and or sexuality don’t come into it.”

Shouldn’t do in an ideal world. In reality women sportswriters, especially those writing about men’s sports, get bombarded with enormous amounts of sexist abuse. And I don’t mean criticism that just so hsppens to be directed at a woman, I mean full-blown misogyny. Article comments sections and twatter amplify this, or at least the extent to which the journalists get to hear it. On top of which, professional football is one of those few corners of modern popular culture that really haven’t gone all woke on the LGBT+ stuff.

So yes I think it does matter, though it shouldn’t. As a little-known freelancer submitting match reports in text, I guess if they were published with no byline (or a fake one, as sports reports from an agency sometimes are/were), then it might indeed have made no difference – but I think her media profile, though small, is too big for that.

They’re doing their best to bring the same stifling conformity and ritualised virtue-fapping to the game.

First step is to pretend people care about women’s football.

  6. At least he/she/him/her/it/what? is actually writing about sports. Unlike the (former) editor in chief at Deadspin (a sports news website) who quit because her bosses wanted her to write about – gasp! – sports, and not politics etc. 🙂

  7. Trannies: tolerance is no longer enough all must Believe they are what they say they are

    https://www.spiked-online.com/2019/08/16/nineteen-eighty-four-is-now-a-policing-manual/

…spiked: What’s the aim of the judicial review?

Miller: There are two defendants. First is Humberside police. We’ve told them to remove my name from their hate-incident statistics. They can’t have me down as a hate incident because there was no hate and there was no incident. Defendant number two is the College of Policing. We have told them they have to immediately withdraw their guidelines on hate incidents because they make no sense.

The problem is that there is a massive conflation between guidance and law. The College of Policing issue guidance that is based on Stonewall’s definition of transphobia, which is not based in law. According to Stonewall and the police, transphobia covers anyone that refuses to believe in the trans ideology. That ideology doesn’t just include men who think they are women — it includes non-binary, agender, bigender, genderfluid, gender-neutral, gender variant, intergender… the list goes on and on. So I have to believe in all of these because to say I don’t believe in them is ‘hate speech’. We are being coerced into believing this bollocks

My friend Margaret Nelson, who is in her 70s, is also part of the Fair Cop campaign. She wrote a blog that talked about the archaeological sexing of bones. She had a phone call from the police because sexing bones is transphobic. Seriously? She was investigated for the crime of misgendering by the West Yorkshire police….

I’ve often wondered how football has “gotten away with it” for so long.

My best guess is that it’s harder to stuff the sports industry with “… Studies” graduates.

  9. It’s still quite a working class sport and managers and pundits (and to some extent administrators, though generally not journalists) are often drawn from the ranks of ex-pros or people who tried to make it as a pro and didn’t, rather than people coming in from graduate training programmes.

  10. All male barristers’ clerks are failed professional footballers. A lot of them, anyway.

They’re spawned in the Medway towns, and in South Essex.

My impression is that the younger ones are, if not exactly woke, then certainly drippy with SJW pieties which would have been unimaginable even ten years ago.

The virus runs deep and wide.

  11. Steve,

Football has become a bit obsessed with respectability, probably because most of the fans are middle class wankers seeking working class credibility.

Worked with a bloke who supported Chelsea. Wasn’t born or raised there. And he’s supporting a bunch of overpaid mercenaries. You might as well be cheering on a company in the FTSE. We love you Compass Group, we do. Come on you Glaxosmithklines.

In their book The Coddling of the American Mind:
How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure* Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt put the great awokening at, IIRC, 2013, which means that those infected are now leaving university and moving it to positions of influence and it won’t be long until its positions of authority. Lets hope that responsibility is the antidote.

*Where American culture goes we follow some time later. With the Internet the flash-to-bang –> zero.

  13. BiND,

I dunno about this stuff. There’s far too much emphasis put on universities and their damage. And this no platform stuff is irrelevant. Post your opinions on the internet for students to read.

The USA voted for Trump, in the UK, Priti Patel’s words have strongly polled.

  14. BoM4,

Its a continuation of the march through the institutions. The revolutionaries know they can’t rest on their laurels.

And since when did strong polling about anything persuade the establishment to listen? We had a referendum, the mother of all polls, and they still won’t listen, let alone act.

  15. The Social Justice Mongers no the peasants compliance is skin deep only with very few true believers.

They have to keep going forward or they die out fast.

Trans looks strong but it’s setting up a civil war in the oppression Olympics. Islam vs women vs trans.

Peak Wank is near or here!

Trump wining 2020 will confirm this is the US. Britain’s confirmation event is less clear.
Boris Johnson is less obviously going to push this shit back. Maybe new nuclear and fossil fuel power generators with wind being brought to an end…..
