Not a manipulated young girl at all, oh no

Greta, 16, who began the “climate strike” movement encouraging children to miss school to protest on Fridays, also launched legal proceedings against five countries on Monday, arguing that they did not prevent climate change despite being aware of the damage it does.

The Swedish campaigner joined 15 other teenagers from countries including France, India, Germany and the Marshall Islands to file the suit at the UN.

“The petitioners do not seek compensation; no amount of money could compensate for the harm children are and will be suffering from climate change, both now and in the future,” the suit reads.

Instead they want the five countries – Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany and Turkey – to accept their mistakes, and pledge to do better in the future.

The five were chosen for being the biggest polluters of the 45 countries that ratified the third optional protocol to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The UK, USA, China and Australia have not signed.

No, no, don’t look behind the curtain there! No one’s directing this at all¬

  1. The third optional protocol to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The UK, USA, China and Australia have not signed.

There must be some vintage batshit craziness in that if even our lot have refused to sign it.

  2. France?? The one that generates ~80% of electricity from nuclear and must be one of the lowest carbon industrialised countries there is?

That’s some weird shit she’s smoking.

  3. @Rob: There must be some vintage batshit craziness in that if even our lot have refused to sign it.

The third optional protocol basically says that whether or not a child’s rights have been violated can be judged by a UN committee rather than the law courts of the country in which it happened. I can see why we didn’t ratify that. Full text here(PDF) for those who like turgid legalese.

The fun bit is article 3, section 2: “The Committee shall include in its rules of procedure safeguards to prevent the manipulation of the child by those acting on his or her behalf and may decline to examine any communication that it considers not to be in the child’s best interests.”

  4. Donald Trump appears to have taken a swipe at teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg, tweeting a video of an emotional Thunberg with an apparently sarcastic comment that she seems to be “very happy” and looking forward to a bright future. “She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!” tweeted the US president late on Monday night.

You can’t but warm to the man.

  5. She’s accusing everyone now of “stealing” her childhood. I hope one day she recognises the role played by her parents in putting her up to this, preferably when they’re in need of old age care.

  6. Trump should just avoid Greta (never work with children or animals, etc). She’s clearly mentally unstable. If she commits suicide the media will drop that on him.

‘France?? The one that generates ~80% of electricity from nuclear and must be one of the lowest carbon industrialised countries there is?’

That is so and less than 10% from fossil fuels and nearly all of that natural gas, the rest mostly from hydro or géothermic with around 1% to 2% from wind/solar depending on the weather.

In fact France produces too much nuclear electricity, otherwise the reactors would not be running efficiently, so it exports a significant amounts to other European Countries.

But: the plan is to replace 50% of nuke capacity with windmills. Currently wind and solar are subsidised and there are grants to install wood burning stoves for central heating/hot water because wood emits ‘good’ CO2 which does not cause global warming.

So genuine concern for ‘the climate’ not at all for political, ideological reasons.

  8. “Instead they want the five countries – Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany and Turkey – to accept their mistakes, and pledge to do better in the future.”

Well I can see that at least 3 of those 5 will take zero notice of her tantrums. The other 2 are led by less adult leaders so will probably prostrate themselves……

  9. “No amount of money could compensate for the harm children are and will be suffering from climate change, both now and in the future”

And even if there IS some degree of harm, there won’t be any money left in the kitty to provide “com-pen-say-shun”, because it will all have been spunked away on useless wind turbines, solar panels and batteries…

I’m not always his biggest fan but on this one he’s spot on.

There’s a spiked article ‘Save Greta’ which articulates very well that what has been done to this modern day ‘saint for our times’ is by almost any yardstick mental abuse. The Greens, Socialists and Environmentalists who are manipulating this girl ought to be ashamed of themselves. Appalling but proof (if anyone needed it) that we are dealing with some of the most evil and ruthless beings in history. All the Richard Murphys, the Caroline Lucases, the Jo Swinsons, etc… Their names will live long in the annals of infamy.
