Erm, actually, didn’t we know this already?

Boosting testosterone levels significantly improves female athletic performance, according to one of the first randomised controlled trials.

The findings come as the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) announced on Monday it would impose an upper limit for testosterone levels on trans female athletes competing in middle-distance events.

Testosterone was assumed to be performance-enhancing and a factor in explaining differences in strength and endurance between men and women. However, there was a surprising lack of evidence on the impact of testosterone in women and the question had become mired in controversy following a series of rulings in professional sport.

The latest research confirmed that testosterone significantly increases endurance and lean muscle mass among young women, even when given for a relatively short period.

I’m sure we did you know. Either that or the East Germans were not winning all those gold medals.

  1. The answer is just to abandon separate competitions for women. True, only in acrobatics will they then shine, or ultra-long distance running perhaps. But (i) it will end all this who-is-and-who-isn’t baloney, and (ii) it will remove the need some people apparently feel to fake an interest in women’s sports.

I mean, I don’t give a hoot about which man can throw a javelin furthest, and even less of a hoot about which woman.

Another possibility is for The State to shut up about the issue and exempt the various athletic organisations from the laws on sexual discrimination and whatnot. Let ’em adopt their own rules on the matter. If they want naked female wrestling for young women with a fine embonpoint, so be it. If they can attract enough players and spectators to run female rugby/football/cricket, fine.

My vote is for the second suggestion.

  2. ‘didn’t we know this already?’

Of course. This is a political announcement.

Checking for Xs or Ys in saliva would work fine. Scientifically. But not politically.

Women are being thrown under the bus. And saying nothing about it.

  3. Trans women have never made a secret of the fact that they regard themselves as superior to biological women and that they will supplant them

  4. Diogenes,

The most successful women in the world got there by billionaires wanting to nail them. Name a billionaire marrying a tranny.

  5. @ dearieme
Ultra-long-distance walking: but in both cases the appearance of female superiority is down to a single exceptional individual (or a tiny number of individuals) in a sport with relatively few competitors.

  6. “True, only in acrobatics will they then shine, or ultra-long distance running perhaps.”

Equestrianism already competes equally I think. There’s certainly no separate female only horse racing – female jockeys ride against male ones.

  7. I understand that there will be a golf tournament held next year where men and women compete ‘equally’.

Whether that will mean the par 4s will be driveable or reduced to a drive and a chip for the men or will be out of range of most of the women in two I don’t know.

  8. Not just the trans it’s also those women with very high testosterone level like the Caster women. She’s been saying it breaches her human rights to have to take testosterone reducing drugs as she should be allowed to compete naturally and has argued about how much of an advantage it is anyway. Proving it gives her an unfair advantage and how much of an advantages is one of the defences the sporting bodies are having to deal with, now the lawyers are involved you can’t just pick a number there has to be some rigour behind it.

The whackier end of the lefty spectrum are already starting to agitate that a man refusing to have sex with a trans woman who still has a penis is some sort of hate crime. That started as Titania McGrath and someone took it seriously.

    Poe’s Law!

We have a very good female golfer who has made it to the level below the main European ladies tour and made the cut a couple of time. That must put her in the top 200 or so in Europe, 500 at worst.

She can’t even beat her brother of scratch, and he’s not the best golfer in the club.

  11. Boosting testosterone levels significantly improves female athletic performance

No sh!t. It isn’t magic or God that makes men better than women at nearly everything, after all.

  12. “I understand that there will be a golf tournament held next year where men and women compete ‘equally’.”

If sanctioned by the US PGA, you can count on it being competed on the same course. Due to the Whaley Rule. Which came about after the PGA was lambasted for allowing Suzy Whaley to hit from the ladies tees in a PGA tournament.

  13. There could theoretically be a golf course of fiendish sub-200 yard par 3 holes which would negate the male advantage. But who would bet against the entire top of the leaderboard being male?

  14. No doubt plans are being drawn for the new PGA pitch and putt competition, coming soon to a municipal course near you

  15. Could happen, BniC. Suzy Whaley is now president of the PGA of America. I don’t know if she is doing a good job or not, but the fix was in for her over a decade ago.

  16. Not just the trans it’s also those women with very high testosterone level like the Caster women.

Caster Semenya is not a woman. She’s an unfortunate man who wants to be a woman. But the XY chromosomes are the deal breaker.

The reason she has very high testosterone is that she has (internal) testicles. That is not a feature of most women.

  17. BniC, even Martina Navratilova (LGetc ) defends the South African on the basis that she is XX chromosomes. What is happening is that these athletic bodies are defending the use of chemicals to reduce performance for these athletes. I thought the world was against performance enhancing chemicals.

  18. There is a clip out there on Youtube, showing several male gymnasts doing female gymnastics (balance beam, uneven bars), for shits and giggles, watched and reviewed by a couple of female ex-gymnasts. They are dismayed to find that the male gymnasts can do the female gymnastics as well, or in a couple of instances, better than the females.

So a male gymnast, can with a bit of practice, do female gymnastics just fine. On the other hand, I can’t find a similar clip of female gymnasts doing the iron cross on the rings, or doing the pommel horse…..
