Another Environmental Report

The speed at which mankind has used the Earth’s resources over the past 20 years has put “humanity’s very survival” at risk, a study involving 1,400 scientists has concluded.

No, that isn\’t what is beiong said. Rather, that the use of environmental services is greater than capacity. We are not talking about "resources" such as fuels, ores, metals. We are talking about the ability of the environment to supply us with services….like clean water, like recycle CO2.

It\’s a very important distinction and one that I\’m suprised The Times does not make.

  1. Of course “resources” can become “supplied services”, although we may have to arrange the recycling ourselves.

  2. I can’t stand this “survival of the human race” bullshit. Sure, there must be an upper limit on total population or something, which we might briefly overstep, but we are nowhere near it at present, AFAICS. This will find its own level. We humans have survived far worse in the dim and distant past.

It sounds like something you might do with mice. Did the scientists just sit there and pontificate or did they set about overbreeding and woops!
