Prem Sikka

A quite gorgeous little article. For a given value of gorgeousness, of course. Prem Sikka says that we have to change the electoral system, we have to have proportional representation so as to….well, what do you think? What\’s the goal here?

Well, actually, it\’s so that we can go back to the glory days of the 1970s.

That\’s a truly exciting idea, don\’t you think? Quite possibly the most gorgeous argument yet in favour of PR.

Well done Prem.

  1. A couple of years ago I was at a BBQ with some ex-IPPR, Blair think tank, folk and they were discussing PR. They were in favour of it because…it would keep Labour in power. So expect increasing calls for PR from the left.

  2. So Much For Subtlety

Perhaps he thought that with the success of Life on Mars, 70’s Retro was all the rage with the young-uns and this idea would fly?

There are a lot of things I like about 1974, but unfortunately none of them are mentioned by Prem Sikka.

  3. The thing is the Tories need PR.

All these claims about keeping Labour in power are false, it would free people up to vote for more parties.

Under multi-member STV you also get to vote for different candidates – is there a libertarian Tory and a wet Tory? Put the libertarian one higher on the list.

Labour want AV+ which is less proportional and has an even bigger bias towards them.

Anyway, no ‘strong government’ means more difficulty in government acting. If we’re really lucky we might end up like Belgium with no government… (I don’t put any faith in government actually rolling back the state, not yet, and not whilst we have the current political elite, I’d rather stay their hand as much as possible than risk more New Labour style policies)
