Norman Geras Speaks Out!

I don\’t think anyone should be able to earn £500,000 or more a year, not in any job. There\’s something wrong with a society in which they can do so while there are children living in poverty.

I do hope that Norm is going to mention this the next time he hobnobs with Alan Rusbridger….

  1. There are a lot more children living in poverty where the only people “earning” that sort of money are corrupt politicians.

  2. I have a lot of time for Norm, but have to shake my head in despair at this one. Firstly, £500k is an arbitrary figure plucked from thin air. It might as well be £400k or £600k. Secondly, capping salaries at £500k would not raise a single child out of poverty, as child poverty is not caused by people earning too much.

  3. “There’s something wrong with a society in which they can do so while there are children living in poverty.”

Why should the one have any bearing on the other?

  4. I think we should be clear about this. Is Norman Geras proposing that the salaries of professional footballers should be capped and – if so – by what means?

“The average basic salary of a footballer in the English Premiership is £676,000 a year, or £13,000 per week, according to an exclusive survey of professional players by The Independent. That figure typically rises by between 60 and 100 per cent when performance-related bonuses, including for actually playing, are added.”
