Car manufacturing is doing well: so let\’s leave it alone, eh?

  1. Tim,

I have commented in detail on your piece on the ASI blog.

Suffice to say that your assertion that UK car manufacturing is doing well because more cars are being exported doesn’t hold water. You can export more even if total output is falling (as it has done in the last few years).

Export performance is as much about globalised markets as it is about output performance. Comparing imports and exports in the context of overall sales would give a better picture.

  2. Volume car manufacturing is doing well in Britain nowadays mostly because of the Japanese manufacturers – Nissan, Toyota and Honda – which initially established new plants here on greenfield sites in the 1980s and early 1990s.
