Really? The Times is using the Government\’s propaganda site as a source of impartial information?

Well, that was my first reaction. Having actually read their entry on cannabis I have to admit that it\’s not quite as bad as it used to be.

There’s also increasing evidence of a link between cannabis and mental health problems such as schizophrenia. If you’ve a history of mental health problems, depression or are experiencing paranoia, then taking this drug is not a good idea.

That\’s pretty much as I understand matters: not so much that pot *causes* schizophrenia, but that it may exacerbate pre-existing conditions.

  1. It was on telly yesterday. Three million people smoke it, it caused either no or one death last year. Yup, there is an issue with schizophrenia. A few hundred people have to be sectioned every year. This costs, what, £10,000 per patient? Total cost £10 million?

So if we legalised, regulated and taxed the stuff, collecting £1 in tax per user per day, that’d be annual receipts of £1 billion, that’d more than cover the external costs.

  2. If you suffer from paranoia then it’s definitely not a good idea to do something that might make the police want to put you under surveillance.

  3. I’ve got a rant on this as well.

[incidentally, if the government’s investigators are being charged £200 for an ounce, someone saw them coming. It looks like someone’s multiplied the eighth price up by eight, rather than actually looking at the ounce price. Allegedly.]

  4. Agreed, pdf. They’re getting screwed over the price. You get discounts for buying in bulk just like in any other market. The reason many don’t is because the potential punishment can take some crazy leaps upwards if you get caught having done so.
