Business Link

An interesting description and an explanation of why th money spent upon Business Link produces no measurable output whatsoever.

We talked about the £12.5 million that Darling has in the budget to encourage female entrepreneurs.  We wanted to know how this was going to be distributed. As with many of these things it may have been dropped into the budget at the last minute and Theresa didn\’t know how it was going to work. Along with the other women sitting at my table, we voiced the opinion that it should not be distributed by Business Link.  If this was the plan then they might as well just throw the money in the bin now, as it will never get to the right place in the right quantities.  The problem with Business Link is that all of their advisers are retired male civil servants who have never run their own business. They have no idea of the challenges that women face. The curse of the men in grey suits again.

There\’s some of your government waste right there. Best abolish it all and save the money, eh?

  1. Surely, the primary purpose of Business Link is to show small businesses how much the government cares about them. Its measurable output is the extent to which the owners and managers of small businesses vote for New Labour.

Nor those that male entrepreneurs face…

  3. I keep getting phone calls from Bus Link offering a free consultation. I don’t want a free f****** consultation. I want to be left alone, taxed less and regulated less.

I’ve never met anyone from a Business Link that in any way helped any of my businesses. They were all useless tossers. IMHO, the only value anyone can extract from Business Link is the free money they dish out as custodians of the (formerly known as) DTI SMART award (which now require so much hoop jumping that one hesitates to even bother applying).

  5. “They have no idea of the challenges that women face. The curse of the men in grey suits again.”

Reagan’s dictum: The most terrifying words in the English language are: I’m from the government and I’m here to help.

    proved once again

  6. Further news on the £12.5 million. I’m told by the North East Chamber that it was indeed put into the budget at the last minute so no-one really knows how they will make it work. However it seems that Business Link may be out of the loop as it is expected to be distributed via an Enterprise Capital Fund.

My view is that this will be even less likely to get the money to where it is needed. Must email Theresa again…
