Not a Good Idea

Boris Johnson is to demand more rigorous controls of the £9.3 billion London Olympics budget amid fresh signs that the project is heading for financial difficulties due to the global credit crisis.

I\’ve called, not entirely jokingly for us to call Paris and ask if it\’s too late for them to take this over.

Very much more seriously for the sake of Boris\’ career I wouldn\’t start by saying that I\’m going to take responsibility, that I\’m going to make it work. Rather, I\’d get a decent team of forensic accountants in now to show how the financing of this project has been entirely buggered right from the start. I\’d reveal all the lies, the obfuscations, the idiot assumptions and I\’d get it all on paper right now.

Show up Jowell and the rest for the, at best, gullible fools, at worst mendacious ones, they have been.

Then, only then, would I say that we\’ll start from here, prepare a real budget and then I\’ll take responsibility.

There is, of course, huge political value in showing them up: but the real value comes in the longer term: for those budgest still seem woefully understated. Get the corrections in now, while the previous administration can be blamed.

And most importantly, in the role of Mayor, by clearing the decks now, by showing that x billions more will be required, and showing that the absence of this from the current budget wassn\’t his fault, he can then insist that London rate payers don\’t have to pick up the extra bill.

Yes, I know that screws the rest of us, who will have to, but he\’s Mayor of London remember?

  1. “Rather, I’d get a decent team of forensic accountants in now to show how the financing of this project has been entirely buggered right from the start. “

Aren’t they all too busy trying to unravel Ken’s finances with regard to Lee Jasper and other assorted state finance spongers…?

What offer Paris a “donation” to take it off London’s hands? That would be a great idea. They could take Seb Coe as part of the deal too.

  3. I agree with the point you are making about putting the blame where it belongs on Jowell, Coe et al. But I disagree with this

by showing that x billions more will be required

x billions more are not required because the Olympics are not required. If we must still host them, I would fix the budget, ideally to the £2.4 billion (IIRC) figure we used to win the bid, and cut the scope and quality of the games to fit.

  4. Couldn’t we just do what we do with electronics and toys and outsource it to China, particularly as they’ve got a load of nice new facilities.

  5. Is there any penalty for us as a country if we were just to say FUCK The olympics, it’s an expensive waste, and we’re not fucking doing it.?

Tim adds: No, it’s been done before, with the Winter Olympics.

  6. So Much For Subtlety

We probably can’t get rid of the Olympics without massive shame. Paris probably won’t take them anyway. Cutting them down to size would look cheap.

Of course we could get out of it, or at least get out of most of it, the easy way.

Just encourage Boris to speak his mind on a broad range of subjects from logging in the Amazon to Burma’s disaster relief, to China’s efforts in Tibet all the way through to Zimbabwe’s recent elections. In no time we will face a massive boycott and it will just be us and that half of the Commonwealth whose leaders hope to have tea with the Queen one day. And America if Obama loses.

Then no one would blame us or accuse us of being tight fisted.

Mind you, the f*cking Australians would walk away with the lot. Can Boris say something about shagging kangaroos?

  7. Quote: “We probably can’t get rid of the Olympics without massive shame….. Cutting them down to size would look cheap.”

I can’t see how it makes sense to spend £12bn and counting of taxpayers money to avoid shame or looking ‘cheap’. In fact, I am prepared to look cheap for a whole lot less.
