Timmy Elsewhere

The ASI.

Why does the man who proved that bottom up development works now advocate a top down solution?

  1. At a guess – because while he understands that bottom-up development is the only way to bring long-term prosperity, he also understands that when there is an actual crisis and poor people are actually starving, giving them actual food makes them actually not die. And that’s true even though a major contributor to the crisis has been the lack of bottom-up development.

Look at it this way: the best way to avoid getting sick is to eat a healthy diet and take regular exercise, not to dose yourself up on pre-emptive antibiotics. But that doesn’t mean that if someone gets TB, we should solely prescribe them oranges and jogging…

  2. Maybe there are better perks recommending “top down solutions”: conferences in Bali and the Caribbean, generous research grants, and hanging out with world leaders and celebrities.
