Victoria Wood, the comedian and sketch-writer turned actor, was given a CBE.
Congratulations to Ms Wood of course, but a hearty Tsk, Tsk for Ms. Gammell, the author of this piece.
I remember being ticked off some years ago by someone on the letters page at The Times on this matter.
People are *appointed* CBE, not *given* or*awarded*.
That’s not the only example of standards in decline today. Dear oh dear.
In modern news parlance (avoid the passive voice at all costs) surely she “received” a CBE?
She deserved it, if only for “Scotland – where everywhere is pronounced Kirkcudbright and spelled Ecclefechan”.
