The NHS and Health Tourism

OK, so there\’s an EU Directive going through the works to insist that you can travel abroad to get health treatment, the NHS picking up the bill.

Some worry that this will mean Johnny Foreigner comes to the NHS for treatment:

A spokesman also insisted that the NHS would not suffer from an invasion of “health tourists” because the EU proposal states that if a particular service is being overloaded, the Government can apply for it to be omitted from the equal access scheme.

I don\’t think that\’s the reason, do you? Why would you leave your home country to get worse treatment abroad?

  1. Eh? The legislation will allow the Government to stop people going abroad if it increases the spare capacity in the NHS?

Isn’t that a good thing (at least from the point of view of the people left using the NHS)?

I can’t see anyone choosing the UK over France, the Netherlands, Scandinavia or just about any other developed EU country when it comes to healthcare.

Mind you, I was reading in The Times this morning that the government could still crack down on this as the legislation will allow them to stop people going abroad if it seriously increases the spare capacity in the NHS – so if everyone wises up to the fact that we can get better treatment abroad, the system grinds to a halt.

That’s because you’re an idiot. UK healthcare outcomes are pretty much the same as those elsewhere in western Europe (we waste slightly less on prolonging the suffering of people with certainly-fatal cancer, thereby falling behind on some popular-with-abolitionists metrics, but on the other hand we have less MRSA and live longer…)

  4. Actually we have a good deal more MRSA than any West European and most East European countries. That particular problem could be solved very easily and DOES NOT NEED GOVERNMENT INTERFERENCE. Just clean the place.
