A bit hopeful, no?

It would be wonderful to think that the intense interest with which Europeans are following today\’s US presidential election might be matched by Americans watching the European parliamentary elections in June 2009.

Well, yes Hans-Gert. But the US election is for someone who can actually change things, somone who has some power, however constitutionally limited.

The EU Parliament, on the other hand, is pretty much a rubber stamp for whatever the Commission decides it would like to happen. It does not, for example, have the power to propose laws. It can only discuss those proposed to it.

It\’s just not going to attract the same interest, is it?

It won’t even be close with the Europeans, why should the Americans care?
