So we\’ve got the guns firing off in the park with a salute about the opening of Parliament.
I\’ve sort of lost count but it\’s at about 29 or 30 at the moment.
I thought the tippy toppy level was a 21 gun salute?

The Tower of London is having a 41-gun salute at 12.00.
Tim adds: Thank you, that explains that then.
And there’s more!
The basic salute is 21 rounds. In Hyde Park and Green Park an extra 20 rounds are added because they are Royal Parks. At the Tower of London 62 rounds are fired on royal anniversaries (the basic 21, plus a further 20 because the Tower is a Royal Palace and Fortress, plus (it’s staring to get silly now) another 21 ‘for the City of London’) and 41 on other occasions. The Tower of London probably holds the record for the most rounds fired in a single salute — 124 are fired whenever the Duke of Edinburgh’s birthday (62 rounds) coincides with the Saturday designated as the Queen’s official birthday (also 62 rounds).

Huh. And there was me hoping the place was getting physically smaller with every round heard. I had in mind the sort of salute offered by Yeltsin at the Russian Parliament in 1993.
I continue to live in hope.
Heck 646 would be about the right number of shots I think..
Z.
Absolutely tip-toppy. Maybe it was a different group having their turn.
@former tory LOL
All these salutes will be abolished soon in case any children are frightened.
The salutes are fired to drive away penguins who might otherwise savage young children.
