The boys are letting off the big guns in the park again. Not really quite sure what it\’s all about so I had a quick look at the "on this day in history" part of my diary.
"Britain declared war on France in 1778."
Worth celebrating, certainly.

The fact that the United States has never declared war on France remains a source of shame and embarrassment for most of our citizens.
and the USA would never have become independent without French aid – aren’t most Americans deeply ashamed of that as well?
Not really. It was about the only time in our history where we got to spend their money, rather than the other way around.
There was never a war with France that had a bad outcome. The Hundred Year’s War involved lots of lovely summer holidays in the Midi. And needless to say the War over America ended up getting rid of the Americans.
So obviously we ought to declare war on them tomorrow. Make Britain a better place.
It strikes me, that they could have a war in London and Timmy would just assume it was someones birthday.
If we got to the point of firing live rounds in London, I think even Karl Marx would notice.
Diogenes and Dennis:
I believe a fair part of the French aid we got was actually private–the gift of the Marquis de Lafayette’s father. Of course, De Grasse’s fleet at Yorktown didn’t hurt none.
Were you aware that Lafayette visited Jefferson in 1826, and, returning to France, packed along several tons dirt from Monticello so he “could be buried in American soil?”
