The best of British

No, not this bit.

A group of around 20 men in traditional Islamic dress held up banners and placards that read: "Anglian Soldiers Butchers of Basra", "Anglian Soldiers Criminals, Murderers Terrorists" and "Baby killers".

As the battalion, which is nicknamed The Poachers, reached Luton Town Hall the small group shouted and yelled "Terrorists" and "Anglian Soliders Go to Hell."

Shouting a thte soldiers who have been risking their lives on behalf of the body politic is not what I mean by the best of British.

However, this is.

The protestors then had to be protected by police as angry supporters of the soldiers turned on them shouting: "Scum" and "No surrender to the Taliban."……Two lines of police officers protected the anti-war protestors from a large number of locals,

We are still a free country and we do still enjoy (however much some would like to take it away from us) the right of free speech. And the duty of the police is to protect the rights of the citizenry.

People shouting at soldiers have the same rights to such protection as I do if I were shouting "God Save the Queen".

That\’s the thing about civil liberties you see. They have to be extended to all, even to those you or I find appalling, disreputable or even disgusting. The whole point of them is that no one is beyond the Pale.

  1. I couldn’t agree more.

I do wonder why some types of demostrations are more likely to “generate a disturbance to the peace” than others though.

It seems that islamofacists have a better right to free speech than others.

I did chuckle at the description of the soldiers “as being as bad as Hitler”, by a man who supports the imposition of a totalitarian system which institutes the death penalty for people who change their imaginary friend.

  2. Ah… Serf beat me too it. I wholeheartedly agree with view on freedom of speech but yes, it also seems strange that Muslim freedoms to incite “Death to Infidels” are greater than the freedoms of schoolboys to proclaim “Scientology is a Con”.

  3. As usual the BBC and other media outlets decided to maximise this for their own benefit, and then gave extra publicity to a spokesman for the idiots by interviewing him on national television.

  4. You are quite right; and I look forward to seeing your exegesis on how the immigration of foreign jihadists increases the sum of human happiness.

  5. Dole money is for people who are actively job-seeking. You aren’t supposed to get it if you are spending your time on other things.

And if you are able bodied enough to be standing around for hours in the bitter cold and pouring rain, you shouldn’t be getting any incapacity benefit either.

So the scrounging ratbags shouldn’t be getting anything.

    Stop their benefits.

  6. “And the duty of the police is to protect the rights of the citizenry.”
Yes but of course these people should never have been given citizenship and if they try to enforce Islamic law in this country or break any laws (e.g. calling for attacks on British soldiers) they should lose it and be deported.
If we can´t deport them pay some 3rd world country to look after them.

  7. What of the two people who were arrested for shouting back at the demonstrators, no doubt abusively? What of their rights to free speech?

  8. “We are still a free country and we do still enjoy (however much some would like to take it away from us) the right of free speech.”

So what would happen if you and a group of friends stood outside of a London mosque, shouting how Islam was the favorite religion of international terrorists, and sharia law was barbaric for condoning the slaughter of underage girls for simply talking to a young man?

Note, if you will, that the protesters mentioned in the article were making risible claims, while everything mentioned in the previous paragraph is certainly true.

I agree with you that the right of free speech must be extended to all if it is going to mean anything, but I really don’t think that you or your group would enjoy that right. That is why, in the eyes of this American, Great Britain is hardly a free country.

  9. “So what would happen if you and a group of friends stood outside of a London mosque, shouting how Islam was the favorite religion of international terrorists, and sharia law was barbaric for condoning the slaughter of underage girls for simply talking to a young man?”

You’d be lying, for a start: sharia doesn’t prescribe the slaughter of underage girls for simply talking to a young man (as was traditionally the case in the other monotheistic religions, adultery and sodomy carry the death penalty, and are the only consenting sexual offences to do so).

But anyway. If you managed to stay on the side of not shouting lies to incite hatred, then you’d be fine, whatever Daily Mail nonsense there is to the contrary.

  10. But ‘honour killings’ have fuck-all to do with sharia, and indeed are prohibited under it.

As with the Mosiac code, sharia is an attempt to limit traditional tribal practices, blood feuds, honour killings (eye for an eye, etc) by saying you should *only* impose the punishments it lays down. None of which include death for girls who talk to strangers.

  11. (just in case it’s not obvious from me @14, ‘eye for an eye’ is an example of how the Mosiac code limits vengeance to proportionate levels, not an example of traditional tribal practices)

  12. OK, john b, so how about if you stand outside the Finsbury Park mosque and claim that the following passages from the Koran (inter alia) are wicked and barbaric:

8:12 Then your Lord spoke to His angels and said, “I will be with you. Give strength to the believers. I will send terror into the kafirs’ hearts, cut off their heads and even the tips of their fingers!”

4:91 If they do not keep away from you or offer you peace or withdraw their hostilities, then seize them and kill them wherever they are. We give you complete authority over them.

9:29 Make war on those who have received the Scriptures but do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day. They do not forbid what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden. The Christians and Jews do not follow the religion of truth until they submit and pay the poll tax, and they are humiliated.

You WILL be told to knock it off by the cops; if you demur, you WILL be nicked, probably for behaving in a manner liable to cause a breach of the peace, if not under some more draconian multi-culti statute. If some passing Islamist lamps you then he will like as not get off scott-free.

And ‘an eye for an eye’ was in the Hammurabic Code long before the Mosaic.

How do you condone the fact a 75 year old Saudi lady has been condemned to a thrashing “for consorting with young men not her close relatives”. I what I read was correct, the two guys, one a distant relative went and bought her daily groceries and delivered them to her house. The lads are going to get six of the best from the public thrasher too, by all accounts.

When I were a nipper this sort of thing earned you a Boy Scout badge and double helpings of cocoa.

  14. Freedom of expression does protect their right to be obnoxious and offensive to the rest of society. But by the same token, we should be able, with absolute impunity, to take one of those big flags with a quran verse on it, and cheer while we burn it outside one of their mosques on their prophets birthday.

And we should be able to buy toilet paper with a picture of bin laden on every sheet.

Something tells me that this government would find a way of stopping us.

But my favourite street protest accessories would be polystyrene lamp-posts we could parade through the town, with effigies of our bloody thieving, stinky cabinet ministers dangling prettily in the breeze.

  15. “You’d be lying, for a start: sharia doesn’t prescribe the slaughter of underage girls for simply talking to a young man”
No it does not. It does have encourage 50 years olds to marry and have sex with 9 year old girls – much nicer

  16. One wonders where the famous public intellectual John Band acquired his scholarship of the Koran. Probably the same place as Geoff Hoon.

To the tune of ‘Do ye ken John Peel’ –

    Do you ken John Band
    How he reads Islam
    How his open mind
    Makes up comment spam
    He’s an all round guy
    Who says silly things
And who makes mistakes like badmouthing lawyers!

  17. @17: Saudi is a crooked, evil place run by c***s, however that story is odd even by local standards. The lady in question, or one of her relatives, will have pissed off a local judge or bigwig of some description for them to bring that case (and to convict her despite the fact that the boy did count as a relative under Islamic law).

@18: they made it, they sold it, it was legal. Sadly the company in question seems to have gone bust, presumably because nobody cares about OBL anymore.

@20 go and fuck yourself you ignorant prick. Although you might first want to explain what the flaming hell the ‘badmouthing lawyers’ reference is about.

  18. ‘@20 go and fuck yourself you ignorant prick. Although you might first want to explain what the flaming hell the ‘badmouthing lawyers’ reference is about’

Oh, well, you see I’m a lawyer; and 29th November 2008, you wrote of me that,

“Not people who don’t think the way I do, merely people who publish relentless reams of gibbering shite, mostly centred around “let’s kick out the darkies”. Which would be an excellent summary of all your pieces here, and all your comments at Tim’s.”

The post on which that comment is contained is here –

Regardless of what you might think about the merits of anything I have written in the past, this characterisation of it was grossly defamatory. If I wanted to, I could sue you for it. That should make you uncomfortable. However, oddly enough for a lawyer, I don’t actually believe in suing people. I’ve been involved in it often enough to know it’s a gross waste of time and money. I also have stupid notions about free speech. We have enough people trying to make it difficult to speak freely in this country without me adding to the burden. But even at a time when civil liberties seem to hang by a thread, people like you don’t seem to realise that the right of free speech might one day depend upon the useof judicious restraint when exercising free speech. You don’t get that. I would prefer to have those whose errors are pointed out to them actually heed them, to thank their lucky stars that I am a grossly disinterested litigant and resolve to avoid making similar errors in the future. But not you.

    Why is that, John?

But that’s precisely the system of law these Wahabi influenced loons want to impose. It may be a corruption of the true word as written in the Koran but it’s a corruption they all seem to have signed up to.

I agree with Tim that these cnuts have every right to make public tits of themselves. But by the same token I want my right to point out exactly why they are tits protected with the same zeal.

Sadly, at the moment, this does not seem to be the case.
