I disagree, of course

"Communism was a terrible, murderous system that claimed millions of lives," said Professor Wojciech Roszkowski, a leading Polish historian and member of the European parliament.

"It was very similar to National Socialism, and there is no reason to treat those two systems, and their symbols, differently. Their glorification should be prohibited."

I don\’t think that the images or the glorification of either should be prohibited.

But isn\’t it nice to see someone stating that the rancid murderous thugs of communism are as morally beyond the pale as the rancid murderous thungs of the fascists?

  1. Pretty much the conclusion I came to when I read that. Banning symbols or artefacts such as these simply does not solve the problem. It was however refreshing to see communism and nationalist socialism held in equal contempt.

  2. “communism and fascism..”: no, the Polish chap was careful enough to compare communism and National Socialism.

  3. dearieme makes a good point. Common fascism was merely an unpleasant system, not comparable with National Socialism or Communism.

  4. Well, if anyone knows this, it’s the Poles: They got screwed by a joint operation of the Nazis and the Soviets in ’39.

  5. Dearieme,

You of the many great comments..

Did not Hayek argue that Fascism, as in the 3rd Reich, had it’s roots in National socialism (Road to Serfdom, 1944). They used to say that because things were so bad in Germany in the inter war years, there needed to be a single govt with sufficient power to make the radical reforms to get the country through and so on.

Here in Ireland some or our major contributors eg. Kevin Myers are calling for a National party of govt because of the exceptionally difficult times. It’s not like we’d slip into a phase of arm pointing from it but it gives credence to the original argument and reaffirms that Fascism is at heart a socialist movement.
