  1. I’m not sure the latter strategy entails ‘barking mad’ – there are a lot of fundies out there, and not all of them are penniless hicks living in shacks.

  2. john b makes a very good point. The best way to swindle someone is to use religion. Tried & trusted.

  3. “..the well known preacher and Christian Zionist Hal Lindsey…”
I’m pretty sure that 98% of the self-professed Christians, even in my area, would not know much of anything of Linsey and the few that do would not refer to Lindsey as “preacher” . But whatever proves your point I suppose.

  4. They’ve tried dowsing for oil in the past.

Oil prospectors don’t care about consensus, or looking silly, or misleading the public, or anything but making accurate predictions about the location of oil.

It’s a very scientific attitude. I find it refreshing. Back when I used to spend time arguing with creationists, it was very useful to be able to point at a bunch of people who clearly had no ideological motive who nonetheless overwhelmingly relied on the orthodox old-earth geological theory. These days, if I had to rely on the universities as authority, I don’t think I would be able to keep a straight face.
