\”and the 48 students chasing each job vacancy.\”

According to the ONS (the official source) there are currently 429,000 job vacancies in the UK. (July 2009 figures).

Does that mean we\’ve got 20,592,000 students in the country?

  1. There’s a possibility that La Lucas’s figure isn’t that far out. Graduates, having been told that getting a university degree is vital to future employment are no doubt applying for the limited number of jobs that accept university degree holders with zero work experience. Meanwhile, most employers are keen to hire those with at least a couple of years work experience or a willingness to get their hands dirty & learn.
