Polly on being a leftist

Life on the left means trusting that the better side of human nature can prevail against selfishness and greed.

Bollocks.

Those who trust in human nature don\’t pass laws to insist that people will redistibute their incomes, pass laws to insist that education, health care, taking care of the elderly, are done by compulsion via the State.

People who trust in human nature will, you know, trust in human nature, will leave people alone and leave it to those very people to voluntarily live up to that better side.

You only compel people when you don\’t believe they\’ll do it.

  1. Extraordinary; does this woman not realise that one of the animating features of many, if not all, leftists, is a lust for power over other people?

  2. No Johnathan, she doesn’t, because she’s a moralist. She is driven by moral fervour and thus believes that power in her hands and the hands of those like her is not only good but essential because it is the only means by which they can do more good. They don’t see this as politics, politics is merely a tool, and they aren’t interested in economics, other than its use as a tool. They only recognise a “lust for power” in sinners; in themselves they see a righteous moral imperative.

  3. “she doesn’t, because she’s a moralist”

Polly was the social affairs editor at the BBC. Of course she was good and righteous.

  4. “Those who trust in human nature don’t pass laws to insist that people will redistibute their incomes, pass laws to insist that education, health care, taking care of the elderly, are done by compulsion via the State.”

Polly didn’t say that ‘the better side of human nature’ had already prevailed. People like Polly Toynbee, who are in the tradition of people from Rousseau onwards, believe that if people’s fundamental natures can be changed for the better and doing that necessarily entails giving more power to those who have already reached a state of enlightenment- Like Polly and her associates in New Labour- in order to do that reshaping.

  5. “Good argument can always persuade enough people …”

You really have to wonder whether she is taking the piss ? Or is that the arguments advanced by PP and her coterie, are, de facto, good and that, by implication, anyone who does not agree with those arguments must be bad ?

Is there any evidence that anyone has been persuaded, ever, by anything PP etc., have argued for ?

  6. @Tim, based on your post that followed this one, you’d presumably agree with the *statement*, just not with the assertion that Pol is a leftist…?

Tim adds: Agree, with reservations and caveats: but definitely, because Polly does not believe this, then she is not a leftist (ie, this is necessary to be on the left but not sufficient).
