If, as is possible, the price of oil surges during the next decade, then using nitrogen fertilisers, which are derived from oil, will become less feasible.

They\’re derived from natural gas actually, not oil.

  1. And you don’t actually have to use natural gas, it’s just very convenient. The Haber process just needs nitrogen + hydrogen + energy.

    And there must be a flow through of price changes from one to the other. To some extent they are substitutes. If oil goes up, more power will be generated by gas for instance.
