Welcome to the Stasi

Britain, already one of the most snooped-upon nations on Earth, is about to become a nation of snoopers.

A network of citizen crimewatchers will be given the chance of winning up to £1,000 by monitoring CCTV security cameras over the internet.

The cameras’ owners will pay a fee to have users watch the footage. The scheme, Internet Eyes, is being promoted as a game and is expected to go “live” next month with a test run in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Subscribers will be able to register free and will be given up to four cameras to monitor.

A private sector one to be sure but not really one to be applauded or welcomed.

  1. What was that poster in Red Dwarf “Back To Reality”? Ah, yes:

[Lister-Sebastian and Kryten-Jake see two propaganda posters]
Sebastian Doyle: [reading] “Vote Fascist for a Third Glorious Decade of Total Law Enforcement”?
Jake Bullet: [reading] “Be a Government Informer. Betray Your Family & Friends. Fabulous Prizes to be Won”?

  2. I rather like that idea especially if it was based around communities. It could foster citizen involvement without actual vigilantes being required .
Give every Bad estate the security you get from a gated private Stalag.
The problem is Tim that you are posh and do not know what it is like to be part of the decent majority in a hell hole . Liberty at all costs does not look as important as order there. Needless to say New Labour will mis -use such an idea , over-use it and grow it into a monster but if say Lovely Boris were to suggest scheme for London I would applaud him , as I always do .Come on Tim what about freedom from crime and threat .. freedom for yobs trouble makers and gangs I do not want.
