Timmy Elsewhere

At the ASI.

On a new paper about how immigration makes us richer.

Of course, in between my writing it and it being published, Chris Dillow alighted upon the same paper.

  1. Richer, yes, but while this fact confirms immigration is not a bad thing, economically speaking, it does not provide us with the answer as to what the immigration policy *should* be.

Factors such as the impact on the infrastructure of the country and the provision of welfare to immigrations (when and how much) are questions whose answers are more likely to be the concern of those who currently live here (including existing immigrants).

  2. Good point about productivity and the division if labour, Tim. I see several commenters on the ASI blog raised various cultural objections and Will S does something similar in relation to infrastructure. Leaving the cultural doomongers to one side, the fears about infrastructure look at immigrants as only takers of services; that ignores that they are and can be producers too.
