My gammy knee merely means that I have to cycle or swim for exercise rather than run…..and long distance walking is out too.

Cycling Timmy, especially on that discount apparatus of yours, with the broken pedals and all, will make your knees worse. You will get arthritis.
Buy a horsey, and a saddle instead. Lovely civilised way to explore the countryside with a friend who asks for nothing more than the apple out of your picnic lunch. Also very good at learning the way home from the pub, and I have yet to see a bike that can do that.
