Britons never never never

Shall be slaves to \’elfn\’safety:

Runners and spectators met at Cooper’s Hill near Brockworth, Gloucs, to carry on the 200-year-old tradition in which competitors chase a 7lb wheel of Double Gloucester down a 200-yard incline. Fans held an unofficial contest and hundreds ignored warnings to attend this year’s event.

Police said there would be no dedicated medical help for casualties and the unofficial contest could jeopardise the chance of an event being held next year under a different format. The contest still attracted about 300 people from as far afield as Holland.

Quite, if you want to do something howlingly stupid then go right ahead. That\’s why we\’ve already paid for the NHS after all: to patch us up after whatever it is that we\’ve decided to do.

  1. “Police said there would be no dedicated medical help for casualties…”

Oh, really? Since when did the police decide that?

And if someone had been injured, and an ambulance had been summoned, would they have refused it entry, so we ungrateful proles could all learn our lesson..?

  2. Acutally, it probably means there wouldn’t be an NHS ambulance on site: the St. John’s Ambulance used to be pretty relaible at attending these sort of things.

Well, that’s one way of looking at things. Another is that having abdicated all responsibility for their own health care to the NHS, Brits now find they have given Nanny the right to interfere and ban anything she thinks might be too dangerous for them.

I’ll leave it to the readership to decide which angle HMG prefers.
