Snigger

Private schools upped their standards in response to policies that were intended to increase equality – with the result that inequality increased.

You should pay attention to economics: it\’s the art of making sure that your actions match your intentions.

  1. it’s the art of making sure that your actions match your intentions.

I’d be rather more comfortable with that statement had the global financial system not recently imploded to the surprise of most economists.

  2. Good point, L E. Perhaps Tim should have written “microeconomics: it’s the art of making sure that your actions match your intentions; macroeconomics is the art of making sure your income matches your expectations”.

  3. I don’t know the answer to this, but are economists really looking at things like the details of securities being traded by banks? Finance has always struck me as being quite separate from economics.

  4. The best economics apercu that I’ve seen lately was by clever Mr Carr of the Indy:
“the current multinational crisis isn’t a crisis of capitalism but a crisis of democracy. Everyone seems to want more democracy but that’s what’s got us into this mess. Over the last 100 years, the public has realised (as the old Scots economist had it) that it can vote itself largesse from the public purse.” Spot on, I’d say.

The policies ‘intended to increase equality’ were the policies that fucked up state education beyond repair. This meant that anyone who could read and write was ‘privileged’ above the victims of the public sector.

  6. “it’s the art of making sure that your actions match your intentions” –

Otherwise known as ‘the ends justfy the means’.

If that’s wrong, please tell me how.

  7. The bailouts were the problem. Leave the banks to sink or swim on their own and you’d see a whole lot of debt for equity swaps and a whole lot more care being used in future when assigning mortgages to people who can’t pay…
