  1. Many Americans have some strange beliefs about schools. They seem to believe, for instance, that one can be either a nerd or a jock but not both. But our best musician was also our best scrum-half and went on to get a decent degree from an ancient university. Our first XV contained two of the top three bright buggers: so did our cricket XI. One of those rugby-playing, cricket-playing BBs also edited the school magazine. Et bloody cetera. Surely yanks must have some schoolchildren who don’t fall into neat, exclusive categories, or is this just some modern variant of “Americans are so conformist”?
