Here\’s a project for a rich man

A huge garbage patch of floating plastic in the North Atlantic Ocean has been documented by scientists for the first time.

Buy one of those oil skimming ships, adapt it to recover solids instead of just liquids, and then run it, repeatedlty, through these gyres where such plastic accumulates.

  1. The picture with that TDT article is utterly misleading.

The average density of the plastic is about 5kg per square kilometre of ocean – barely noticeable.

Judging by the Gulf oil spill, the oceans will cope.

  2. Yeah, I think the ocean is massive and the waste significant, however the ocean is more massive and the density probably isn’t high enough for this to be economical.
