It is thought that just one third of the electronic equipment discarded from within the EU is recycled in line with European regulations.
Under European regulations, all electronic waste must be recycled to reduce its impact on the environment. Most electronic equipment contains harmful metals and chemicals that are dangerous to the environment and human health.
Recycling electronic waste can be expensive, however, and some unscrupulous waste disposal firms attempt to avoid these costs by selling the material to criminal gangs who export it to the developing world.
The thing is, there are both cheap and safe ways of recycling such waste back into its component metals. It\’s just that we\’re not allowed to use such methods within the EU. Thus the problem described above.
Loosen the regulations on methods of recycling and the problem will go away.
