Of the thousands of people fighting in the Brit ships going on for 10% were foreigners, with hundreds of black men from West Indies w.Africa.Not many of them were pressed men: some saw the RN as an equal opportunity profit sharing enterprise with a chance of big money from captured prize ships.Nelson himself was shot while totting up the likely receipts with his agent.
And many were Americans, even so soon after the Revolution. Have you read the tears about the scuttling of prizes after the battle in theletter that has been in today’s/yesterday’s papers?

DBC Reed – “Of the thousands of people fighting in the Brit ships going on for 10% were foreigners, with hundreds of black men from West Indies w.Africa.”
Thus proving the British Empire was not a racist enterprise but a multi-cultural effort involving people of all races engaged in mutually beneficial co-operative effort of the sort that good socialists ought to endorse (literally taking from the rich and giving to the poor as it turns out). Hooray! Time for Nelson to be reintroduced into the school curriculum.
I have said it before – no war against France has turned out badly, no war with Germany has turned out well. We need to learn this lesson on this fine anniversary. And declare war on the French.
Sail upon the Berlaymont?
You’ll need these people:
