N\’ you c\’n bugger off n\’ all

The smoking ban should be extended to the home and private cars to protect children from second-hand smoke, says Wales\’ top doctor Chief Medical Officer for Wales Dr Tony Jewell.

Leave aside the civil liberties, health nazis and all that stuff and consider what this highly respected (*cough*) medic is actually proposing.

When the WHO did a huge report on the effects of smoking, active and passive alike, a decade or so ago, they found only one statistically significant effect of passive smoking upon children.

That being exposed to passive smoke in the home reduced their chances of getting lung cancer in the future.

So the suggestion from this highly respected (*cough*) medic is that we should ban smoking in the home so as to kill more kiddies.

How lovely.

  1. Plus, of course, this would need powers of entry into anyone’s home by councils, etc to check you aren’t smoking.

Totalitarianism disguised as concern for health.

  2. I don’t suppose you have a link to that WHO study.

I have a few rightious at work that could do with meeting the cluebat.

Tim adds: No, sorry, I don’t have a link.

Been at the smokes too much, Tim?

If they’re squeezed from public space and, perhaps, forbidden within one’s own property…Well, where the hell could one smoke? The bottom of the garden?

  4. James and Pogo, I’m sure anyone you try to convince with that study will claim “funded by Big Tobacco” (whether true or not).

As far as this smoker is concerned I might send it to my some of my paranoid friends with kids though!

  5. Ltw… It was actually funded by the World Health Organisation, a body not exactly noted for its enthusiasm for tobacco. I believe that they tried to bury the report as it had come to the “wrong” conclusions, but it escaped rather than was released! 🙂

I’m a life-long non-smoker (not anti-smoker!!) who, if you read my brief blogger profile, expresses extreme distaste for “junk science” – which is the best description of the “SHS scare”.
