Well yes Mr. Chancellor

It doesn\’t matter how many mass killings take place; the constitutional right of all Americans, even mentally unstable ones, to bear arms is now generally accepted as inviolable.

Because that\’s what constitutional right means you see, that the right is inviolable.

  1. “even mentally unstable ones”: are you sure? According to the Market Ticker blog on the 10th of January:

“Jared Loughner has been making death threats by phone to many people in Pima County … When Pima County Sheriff’s Office was informed, ..deputies assured the victims that he was being well managed by the mental health system. It was also suggested that further pressing of charges would be unnecessary and probably cause more problems than it solved …
The suspect didn’t just post one threat on an Internet forum and there wasn’t “just one” incident – it’s alleged here that he made multiple death threats against the staff of the college he was ejected from, radio personalities and local bloggers.

Each and every one of those threats was an offense and had just one of them been prosecuted it would have resulted in the suspect being blacklisted in the NICS database – and thus he would not have been able to buy the gun he shot the people in Tucson with.”

  2. It would of course be much better if lethal force was restricted to government lackeys- and criminals.
That’s the system that stopped the Mumbai massacre-not.
And of course it also makes sure that the government listens to ordinary people doesn’t it.

  3. I’d rather live in a society where citizens are permitted to arm themselves and there is the occasional rampage than a cocooned fantasy world where there is no personal autonomy. And anyway, as we all know, restrictions on gun ownership do not seem to be very strongly correlated with the incidence of loonies or criminals running amok, due to that pesky tendency of criminals and loonies to defy the law.
