In which we hope we manage to piss off Sunny HundalJune 2, 2011 Tim WorstallThe Blogger Himself21 CommentsSunny sez: sunny_hundal: Well done to tax genius @RichardJMurphy – he has been picked up to blog for Forbes too http://onforb.es/jLq29S Coming soon to Forbes.com is \”It\’s all obvious or trivial except…..\” written by your genial host of this blog. Cue protestations that blogging for Forbes is nothing special, obviously. previous@ richardjmurphy: Infamy! It’s one step away from hailing as a genius the bloke who can summon the gods with mistletoe and incantations. Would it really kill people to pick up a textbook? Or at least realise that technocrats are fallible and can probably be challenged by other technocrats? Richard June 2, 2011 at 12:08 pm Do UKuncut, the TUC, etc. actually think that Murphy is a tax genius, or do they just say he is because he’s almost the only accountant who says what they want to hear? Serf June 2, 2011 at 12:11 pm …..Or at least realise that technocrats are fallible and can probably be challenged by other technocrats?…. Where the appeal to authority always breaks down. There is virtually no area of human endeavour where all the experts agree. So quoting an expert who supports your view is rarely very useful. Alex June 2, 2011 at 12:14 pm Murphy has less tax knowledge than the average part qualified tax junior at a Big 4 firm. To hail him as a “genius” merely demonstrates the ignorance of Sunny wossname. Ian Bennett June 2, 2011 at 12:33 pm Follow that last link; the one that says http://onforb.es/jLq29S It resolves to: http://blogs.forbes.com/richardmurphy/2011/06/01/abobe-and-below-the-line/ Read that URL carefully. Jeremy Poynton June 2, 2011 at 12:49 pm Richard Murphy? Wasn’t he the guy who had a regular piece in the Gundurian on how to avoid paying tax? Philip Scott Thomas June 2, 2011 at 1:03 pm From the page linked to by IanB: “I’m a professional accountant. OK, I’ve been trained in economics too.” “I am“? I thought he was retired. And what economics training has he had? I thought he abandoned that course. Blue Eyes June 2, 2011 at 1:41 pm Everyone who agrees with this comment is a genius. Everyone who disagrees is obviously too stupid to understand. Ross June 2, 2011 at 1:54 pm “what economics training has he had? I thought he abandoned that course.” In fairness our generous host has schooled him on economics many times. Gary June 2, 2011 at 3:17 pm Tim, are Forbes expecting/facilitating a regular Raggin’ on Ritchie bunfight? Just that Murphy did say on his blog that Forbes knew exactly what to expect from him. So are you given some sort of brief for the blog? And can you comment on his Forbes blog or can he censor that too? Tim adds: No, I’ll not be ragging on Ritchie there. Pay is (partly) based on page views. My view of him is now so sour that I’ll not earn him money even if it is to make fun of him. Kay Tie June 2, 2011 at 4:00 pm Do UKuncut, the TUC, etc. actually think that Murphy is a tax genius Oh yes. They are believers, not cynics. Kay Tie June 2, 2011 at 4:01 pm Pay is (partly) based on page views. Forbes pay their bloggers? Tim adds: Minimall,y but yes. Gary June 2, 2011 at 4:10 pm Tim, I understand well why you would not want to indirectly fund him, but two thoughts arise: firstly, you do already give him oxygen of publicity by continually linking to him, which *direct* drives Wikioblog rankings. Secondly, it would be spectacularto move the debate to the Forbes platform if he was unable to censor the way he currently does. With a little rope, he would quickly hang himself. Tim adds: I don’t link to him anymore…..and he will still control his own comments at Forbes. David Gillies June 2, 2011 at 4:37 pm I think most of the comments here are far too rude and contrary and Tim should arbitrarily delete them like Murphy does (except this one of course.) Actually I’ve been so apoplectic at Murphy’s utterances at times that I’ve even had to apologise to this estimable blog’s host for coming off like one of the Manson family. I swore to tone it down, but to be honest Murphy doesn’t so much strike me as someone who’d enthusiastically participate in a dekulakisation programme as be the one who proposed it in the first place. I used to regard him as a figure of fun; now I think he might be actively dangerous. Kay Tie June 2, 2011 at 4:54 pm I think he might be actively dangerous. If he obtained power, undoubtedly. Let us hope that men like this do not have the opportunity to rise to prominence for in times of upheaval (after the economic crises of the 1930s, eg) such people – possessed of nothing but a feral cunning – can obtain huge amounts of power, and then wreak dreadful harm on millions. Lee June 2, 2011 at 7:09 pm “Murphy has less tax knowledge than the average part qualified tax junior at a Big 4 firm” Yup, it’s true my juniors can hardly tell a debit from a credit and wouldn’t know a cash flow statement if it bit them on the arse….. but they could easily see through the shite he spouts. I’m going to put this to the test next week. Marksany June 2, 2011 at 7:10 pm Our most dangerous enemy is the plausibility of bad ideas. So Much For Subtlety June 2, 2011 at 10:11 pm Wanting to piss of Sunny seems a low target. It is hardly difficult. Philip Scott Thomas June 2, 2011 at 10:59 pm Pay is (partly) based on page views. OK, so I’ll be bumping up Our Genial Host’s page view count, then. BTW, when did Tim stop being ‘avuncular’ and become ‘genial’? Archie June 2, 2011 at 11:33 pm The great thing is that, for those of us in Switzerland at least, his blog is now accompanied by adverts for ways to avoid paying UK tax! Matt W June 3, 2011 at 9:06 am Forbes following the Huff Po strategy? Feel the width … sorry, Tim. > you do already give him oxygen of publicity by continually linking to him, which *direct* drives Wikioblog rankings. Time for some nofollows?
