This is complete bollocks from Frank Field

In the first year of the Coalition, 87 per cent of the 400,000 newly created jobs have gone to immigrants — as Britons fail to chase work, according to new official figures uncovered by the Labour MP. Under previous Labour administrations the figure was about 80 per cent.

The economy generates 2-3 million new jobs each year. It also destroys a roughly similar amount.

Yes, it is true that roughly 10% of all jobs are newly created each year. To look only at the net figures is to ignore that vey important point.

For by looking at the net figure only one is tempted into the planning delusion. That we only need to \”create\” 200,000, or 500,000, or whatever jobs which we can do by mandating this or that or by the bureaucrats deciding or…..

When in fact, in order just to stand still, we need that market to be creating 2-3 million jobs a year all on its own. And fucking that up by plans to create 200,000 jobs would leave us deep in the doo doo.

Plus, of course, tweaking the market so that it produces an extra 10% or 20% of jobs over and above what it does unaided (by, say, reducing the cost of employing people? NI rates maybe?) is likely to be easier than magisterial commands and demands from the centre.

  1. Progress destroys jobs.
If you invent the horse collar you put lots of oxen wranglers out of work.
If you invent the motor car you put lots of ostlers out of work.
    etc.
BTW Tim, where do you get your 2 million figure from?

Tim adds: It’s roughly right, remembered from looking it up at the ONS a few months back.

  2. Progress also creates work. All those oxen wranglers etc can go off to do other stuff that couldn’t be done before because everyone was so busy doing wrangling.

The motor car has created millions of new jobs. The computer industry has created millions of new jobs. That’s progress.

You’re quite right of course. Even I have noticed that the broo is not crowded with oxen wranglers.
My point is that when I hear a politician boasting about creating jobs what he is actually doing is creating inefficiencies. The day I hear of a pol boasting about the white heat of technology giving us more leisure…
