Sadly I don’t have a subscription to Nature, but Chefio has a post on rare earths up which references this story about the Japanese discovering them on the Pacific floor in huge quantities.
I wondered when you would notice 🙂

If what we are talking here is sedimentary mud then current technologies could ‘hoover’ it up; certainly down to 4km waterdepths.
