An extremely strange statement

And it was a mess because there were no words for a really close friendship that didn’t involve sex or sexuality. There was no status for it.

What\’s wrong with the word \”friend\”?

  1. I’m not sure that “friend” does the trick in American English. A language with expressions such as “close personal friend” is clearly different from ours.

  2. Platonic relationship is pretty close, not that I have a better term. Friend doesn’t work because what they’re talking about is closer – it’s a romantic relationship with everything but sex. They are to friends as friends are to acquaintances.
