If Nobel prize macroeconomist\’s work has no \’direct implications for the current situation\’ what\’s the point of it? http://ht.ly/6SLW1

Erm, celebration of advancement of knowledge maybe?

Honouring of those who have advanced human knowledge?

Or are we to assume the different argument? That he\’s not referring to the Nobel, but the the research?

What? All research must be immediately applicable? Umm, doesn\’t that rather destroy universities?

No, please, Richard, do come and tell us what you mean here.

  1. It’s very simple Tim

I have nothing against the advancement of knowledge – but the Nobel prize is a choice and I would have thought that this might have been the time when applied knowledge both could and should have been celebrated

That’s the exercise of judgement Tim

I believe it’s my right to do so

At least that’s what I understood you libertarians say, except that is when, as is usually the case, you fail to live up to your own ideals

Tim adds: Yes, excellent, so this Nobel is an award to precisely those who have worked on, for decades, the intricacies of the macroeconomic models that should guide governments in their actions today. Your problem with this is what?

That you don’t understand what these economists have been doing? Anything else?

  2. “I would have thought that this might have been the time when applied knowledge both could and should have been celebrated”

    Such as?

  3. “I have nothing against the advancement of knowledge – but the Nobel prize is a choice and I would have thought that this might have been the time when applied knowledge both could and should have been celebrated”

Umm, but that’s not what you said.

You said ‘what’s the point of it?’ And in the context of your sentence, it seems the ‘it’ refers to the work itself. You couldn’t see the point of the work.

  4. RJM – I look forward to your campaign for the removal of President Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize then – after all, what could be less applied than the expectation that he might do good things?

  5. “I have nothing against the advancement of knowledge ”

Why spend your time peddling poisoned leftist garbage then?

100 million human beings murdered by socialism so far not enough for you?

  6. I don’t know about the rules for the pretendy prize in economics, but for the real Nobel prizes: Nobel’s last will specified that his fortune be used to create a series of prizes for those who confer the “greatest benefit on mankind”, according to WKPD. So if they can’t identify a benefit, the panels shouldn’t award the work a prize. Of course, they routinely ignore the rule, but that’s just because they feel like being a bit crooked. Ain’t unrestrained power great?

  7. dearieme – the great Arrhenius was a bit of a guy…see how he tried to skewer Nobel awards to people of whose work he approved…it kinds of casts a shadow over the works of the divine Kevin Trenberth and Phil Jones in our own times.

  8. I was hoping for one of the Murph-meister’s gnomic and meaningless haikus. Instead we got an extended version of his meaningless sense-impressions, unconnected by rational thought.

  9. Reckon he’s just pissed he didn’t get it. Probably reckons he’s entitled. In this age of level playing fields knowing bugger all about the subject shouldn’t disbar you.
Oh well, there’s always next time Murph. Or a peerage. Maybe Duke of Norfolk like your mate Morrie tried for Lord London.
    Aim high son.
    You know you’re worth it.

  10. So Much For Subtlety

    Simon Jester – “Such as?”

Why do I feel that Richie probably thinks that “applied knowledge” in economics is what the rest of us would call accounting?

Would anyone like to hazard a guess as to which giant in the field of accounting he probably thinks should have got the gong?

  11. Yep, sour grapes. He hired the tuxedo, put the champagne on ice and sat by the phone waiting for the call that never came. Alas, another year passes and the UK’s Most Influential Left-Wing Thinker fails to garner the international recognition he so richly desrves.

  12. And no, I didn’t read the two other posts that made the exact same gag hours ago in a much better way because I wanted to spend the time mocking Mr Murphy instead. I’m only human.

  13. Ah Britain’s number 1 economic blogger is just pissed at being passed over again. And at only coming in at number 7 on the list of Influential Left Wing thinkers, despite bigging himself up, and convincing himself he’d be much higher up the list, beforehand. (And did you know he’s got a book out ?)

His ‘ground breaking’ demands for increased statism, and a return to the success punishing fiscal strategy of the 1970’s labour Government, are obviously the absolute apotheosis of modern thinking, and certainly more important than the ramblings of a few damn err… economic theoreticians . Who are probably right wing neo liberalist imperialist evangelist illuminati military industrialist scritti politti etc etc etc…

  14. On second thoughts, maybe the great man should merit a Nobel.
    Not the prize, the product.
Couple of sticks under his car’d result in a small bang in Norfolk & a resounding cheer most other places.
Why can you never find an anarchist nutjob when you really need one?

  15. Ritchie must be really pissed off about the award for Physics this year:
“The Nobel Prize in Physics 2011 was divided, one half awarded to Saul Perlmutter, the other half jointly to Brian P. Schmidt and Adam G. Riess “for the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe through observations of distant supernovae”.

Supernovae? Expansion? What were the committee thinking of? They should have phoned Ritchie up first to check if it was useful.

  16. How does Mr Murphy feel about extending the same logic to the funding of university fees? Don’t fund degrees (history, classics, etc.) that don’t provide a direct societal benefit.
