According to the actress Helena Bonham Carter, a long term acquaintance, the prime minister is far from right wing and not even that conservative.
If her friend of 15-years had been running in America he would be a member of the centre left Democratic party, she added.
It would sorta depend upon which State he was from. But up in New England, yes, probably a Democrat. Not on any ideological grounds, just that that\’s the party that will enable Dave to get elected.
For Dave believes in Dave\’s mission to rule far more than he believes in anything else.
I heard recently that his political hero is Macmillan, a man who would have surrendered to the miners in 1984.
I wish I could believe Dave had a belief in his mission to rule. A lust for power would be an improvement at this point.
I suspect that he is just not very bright or good at anything, so after dabbling in PR for a while, he went into politics because it was an easy way to make a career and he has been doing it ever since. He doesn’t want power so much as a nice pension and a comfy cup of hot chocolate.
“For Dave believes in Dave’s mission to rule far more than he believes in anything else.”
got it in one.
I think he’s just a typical member of the Useless Class. Contrary to SMFS, reasonably bright and ept, but not a great talent at anything in particular. Such people generally believe they ought to be in charge of something or other, or something in the City, and try to Do The Right Thing.
Members of the Useless Class don’t so much believe in a “right” to rule as in a “duty” to do so. Because bossing other people around is what their class just does. To them, it is the natural order of the universe.
Back in the 90s, when I was still working as an electrician, I got roped into this awful job for this terrible woman in Hampstead, a media producer type. So anyway, at one point I’d nipped out for a ciggie and I hear this posh bint’s voice- “You. Yes, you!”. Not the woman I’m working for, a neighbour.
So I acknowledged her, and she’s like “this fellow needs a hand”. This Fellow being a gas fitter who was doing some work for her. A heavy something-or-other had been delivered, and he did indeed need a hand carrying it in. So, being a nice sort of chap, I gave him a hand carrying it in. Having done so, I stood there for a moment awaiting some kind of thanks from the Posh Bint. She gave me this “why is this oik still standing in my faux-rustic kitchen?” look, and gave me a clipped “that’s all”. I exchanged a certain look with the fitter, and off I toddled.
I could have made a point, but there really was no point. To her eyes- as a member of the Useless Class (or more accurately, the wife of one)- all “workmen” are alike and at their disposal. It was her duty to boss me about, and my duty to obey.
I think that might have been the precise moment in my life that I realised that, one day, we will have no choice but to kill them all.
Not telling us anything very useful about the person, or UK politics, but maybe more about the US. I used to tell American friends that Jesse Jackson could sit very comfortably in Margaret Thatcher’s cabinet. The Republicans have always been to the right of the Tories, and are getting more so all the time.
At least he’s better than Brown.
“At least he’s better than Brown”: save that Brown didn’t start any wars.
I don’t think CMD actually started the one in Libya.
dearieme: He didn’t have the time. A few months more, and I think most of the world would have nukes us purely to get rid of him from summits.
Am I permitted to say here that I was surprised to see in a recent photograph how impressive a cleavage HB-C has?
Not without providing a link, no.

You may very well right on this. Did you see iDave’s response to Nadine Dories’ criticism today?
People have got it wrong, because in the interview, she didn’t say that he wasn’t “A conservative”, she said that he wasn’t “conservative” as a person. In other words, he is completely different to how we see him on TV, hence her later going on to talk about his sense of humor.

I used to tell American friends that Jesse Jackson could sit very comfortably in Margaret Thatcher’s cabinet.
Really? Which member of Margaret Thatcher’s cabinet can you imagine saying that they used to get psychological gratification from spitting in the food of White people? Which member of Thatcher’s Cabinet could have said:
“If what was happening here was happening in South Africa, it’d be called racist apartheid. If it was happening in Germany, we’d call it Nazism. And in Italy, we’d call it fascism. Here we call it conservatism.”
Or “Hey, hey, ho, ho, Western Civilization’s got to go!” for that matter.
And whatever else you can say about Wets like Clarke, I doubt he would have ever said:
“Viva Fidel! Viva Che Guevara! Castro is the most honest and courageous politician I have ever met.”
The Republicans have always been to the right of the Tories, and are getting more so all the time.
So much the better for America and so much the worse for Britain. That is why the US may have a future.
Actually, Brown, Collins and Snowe are all Republicans from New England as is Romney and they are all Cameron style squishes.
SMFS, never heard that one, but I can’t think of any Tory cabinet ministers who grew up under pre-Civil Rights era racism in the South, or any kind of workable analogy. Do you think spitting in the soup would have been … disproportionate? Morally reprehensible? Or is it just that it might have been your soup? Get a grip.
if what was happening here was happening etc is just rhetoric – plug in names of countries and ideologies you don’t like and your opponent’s party name at home, and they’re all capable of saying much the same thing, and to equally little point, I agree.
Tory cabinet minister says something silly and admiring about foreign dictator. Not Clarke, I agree, but inconceivable? No.
Anyway, cheer up, the man’s long gone soft and retired.
