Yes, I thought that when I read it.
But should we be surprised? Look at his history:
– wanting to punish people when they haven’t broken the law;
– undermining the courts by appeal to a ‘higher justice’;
– supporting ‘direct action’ mobs to take over property belonging to their opponents.
And although I haven’t read it, the title alone of “The Courageous State” sounds fascist.
And what the hell is “the achievement of purpose through identity” supposed to mean anyway?
All I can think is that we will each be assigned to a socio-ethnic group, and will have to do what is deemed appropriate for that group.
Not sure about fascist – that sounds feudal.
Don’t forget his classic “you can’t have free speech without censorship”.
“Has Ritchie become a fascist now?”
You seem to be implying Richie stopped being a fascist. At least for a while anyway.
Care to supply dates?
“purpose through identity”
Himmm, that des rather sound faimilar. His next one will be “Freedom through Work”.
I have no idea how i would go about achieving my purpose through my identity. Can anyone offer any tips to a beginner?
David Moore,
I had more “strength through joy” in mind.

“‘the achievement of purpose through identity’: personally, I’d prefer the achievement of identity through purpose, but to each his own.”
Despite the competition, I’d say “purpose through identity” is the most damning thing Ritchie has ever said.
“All I can think is that we will each be assigned to a socio-ethnic group, and will have to do what is deemed appropriate for that group.”
Yes, that sounds about right. I would say fascist rather than feudal.
What’s the difference between socialism and fascism anyway? Apart from fascists usually wearing uniforms that is.
James James: if it comes down to it, our gracious host made this exact point in the post you link to!
Jonathan (#10), a lot of the socialists have worn uniforms too. But they usually don’t look as good as the fascists.
Like the Pedant-General, ‘Strength through Joy’ was my immediate reaction.

I guess that’s true. Did you know that Hugo Boss made those black uniforms for the SS?
Fascism was ultimately defeated by the limited range of distinct fabric colours. By the time they were onto silver, they knew the game was up.
I wonder what a Murphy-sanctioned Kraft durch Freude organisation would look like. I envisage something like Hi-de-Hi set in Portmeirion. Rather like Murphy himself: simultaneously naff and sinister.
Does a few quotes from the Nazis make it all wrong?
@Jim and @P-G…
At least he hasn’t got as far as “Work makes you free”…
… yet.
